Annaba Tourist Attractions

Basilica Saint-Augustine

Even though the basilica overlooks the ruins of Hippo Regius, it's a modern building that was finished in 1900. There are 3 dome-topped spires and the statue inside of St. Augustine is a reliquary containing arm bones of the saint. They are closed to visitors on Saturdays, and have limited hours on Fridays and Sundays. If you're visiting the ruins, it's worth a quick side-trip to see this beautiful church.

The Old City (the Kasbah)

The older part of Annaba is the most interesting, with narrow cobbled streets and 16th century buildings all around you. This part of the city is found between Rue de l'Avant Port and Rue 24 Fevrier 1956. There are two old mosques in the area worth visiting: Sidi Bou Morouane Mosque and Salah Bey.

Chappui Beach

At the north end of the city, the Chappui Beach area is the place to go for a little nightlife. There are a large number of modern nightclubs, shops, restaurants and more. It's quite a change from the other historical sights, and the beach is ideal for swimming during the day.

Ruins of Hippo Regius

Not far from the Basilica are the remains of the ancient Roman city of Hippo Regius. It’s recommended that you visit the small museum first, to understand the history and purpose of the site and its remains. There are also some very nice mosaic displays. The ruins themselves are quite spread out, and consist of the walls and columns from homes, bathhouses, and roads. You'll have to pay to enter the site, and they are closed for an hour over lunchtime, so plan your visit in the morning or afternoon.

El Kala National Park

To the east of Annaba is the large El Kala National Park, right on the border with Tunisia. All kinds of environments are within the park, including lakes, forests, mountains, open fields and coastal areas too. There is a small zoo within the park, and several designated areas for bird-watching. The animals that live in the park include many endangered species, and there are reportedly nearly 80,000 animals in the area.

When Should You Visit Annaba?

The heat is highest during July and August, when it will reach 30C (86F) during the day. The rest of the year is quite pleasant with the coolest months being between December and January when it will reach approximately 16C (61F). No particular part of the year is wetter or rainier than the rest, so there is nothing to worry about in that regard. Overall, visiting during the spring, autumn or winter is great.
