Constantine, The City of Bridges, is the capital of the Constantine Province and is situated in north eastern Algeria, about 50 miles from the Mediterranean Sea coast. Constantine is an attractive and scenic city with a good variety of attractions, the most dramatic of which is the large gorge that acts like a moat around the city.

City of Bridges

Constantine is nicknamed the City of Bridges, and quite rightly so! With the large gorge dissecting the city in two the only sensible way to get across is by bridge, and the combination of bridges and gorge make this a popular city to photograph. There are eight significant bridges in the city today including the second highest suspended bridge in the world, which is said to be great for bungee jumping if you have the nerves!

The newest bridge is a cable stayed bridge, completed in 2012, and it crosses the ravine created by the River Rhummel, connecting two parts of the city together. There are also much older bridges too that connect together various different parts of the city.

Landmarks in Constantine

Obviously the bridges are among the major landmarks in Constantine but the city does have others too. There are a number of attractive mosques that are reflective of the fact that 99% of Algerians practice Islam. The Palace of Ahmed Bey is an important historical landmark and has beautiful architecture that goes to make this one of Constantine’s popular attractions, and it’s located within the kasbah, which itself is a popular place for tourists to visit.

The Palace was built between 1826 and 1835 and was visited by Napoleon in 1865. It features attractive Arabian architecture and has inner courtyards where residents would go for peace and quiet.

Other Attractions in Constantine

As well as enjoying the scenery and the architecture, Constantine also has museums, particularly the Gustav Mercier Museum which displays ancient and modern art and offers a look at the culture of Constantine and Algiers.

Outside the city there are the ruins of a Roman city named Tiddis. The excavated ruins are fairly extensive and you can see the remains of roads, buildings and gateways, while inside Constantine there is also the ruins of another Roman creation, the Antonian aqueduct.

When Should You Visit Constantine?

Constantine is hottest and driest during the summer months, but this may feel a little too warm for sightseeing with average highs around 30 to 31C in July and August. June and September are a lovely temperature, in the mid 20’s C, and October and May are pleasant too. There’s more abundant rainfall from November until April, and temperatures drop to a mild average high of 13C in January.
