The North African country of Algeria has had a recently troubled past but stability is now returning to the country. Being the second largest country on the African continent visitors will find a variety of landscapes and attractions here, from the Mediterranean coast in the north, to the Saharan desert in the south, plus many interesting historical and cultural attractions.

The capital of Algeria, Algiers, is where international flights land, at the Houari Boumedienne International Airport (airport code: ALG). None of the scheduled airlines have direct flights from the UK to Algeria, so you would have a one or two stop flight connecting through another European city. Airlines with flights to Algiers include Iberia via Madrid, British Airways via Barcelona, Air France via Paris, or Lufthansa and Air Canada via Frankfurt. KLM also offer two stop flights from London via Amsterdam and Paris.

The Tourist Attractions of Algeria

The majority of Algeria’s population lives on the coast of the Mediterranean, and this is where you will find the country’s capital city, Algiers.

Algiers is largest city in Algeria and offers visitors a range of both modern and historic areas. The Kasbah (also sometimes spelt Casbah) is the old 17th century city and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. This is a very attractive part of the city to explore and features many old buildings including numerous mosques. In the modern city centre you will find a very different atmosphere and architecture. The Monument of the Martyrs is a large and impressive structure worth visiting.

To the east of Algiers is the attractive city of Constantine. The city is surrounded by a deep gorge and is particularly famous for its bridges and the viaduct which cross the ravine. The Gantaret El Hibal bridge is probably the most famous as this is the second highest suspension bridge in the world. Constantine will also attract visitors to its art museum, Gustave Mercier Museum and its Kasbah.

Algeria’s coastal cities are popular with holidaymakers who want to enjoy beaches and the Mediterranean Sea. One of the notable coastal resorts is Annaba which is situated in Northeast Algeria. As well as the beaches Annaba has a lively nightlife and good restaurants, and the city also features attractive architecture to enjoy too.

Algeria is an excellent destination for visitors interested in ancient history as there are a great many ruins including Roman cities. Tiddis, for example, is close to Constantine. The Roman ruins of Timgad, near the city of Batna (which is inland) are amongst the most popular in Algeria and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The most famous structure here being the Arch of Trajan.

Other Roman ruins and UNESCO World Heritage Sites include Djemila in Northeast Algeria, near to the city of Setif. These are one of the best preserved Roman ruins in North Africa. The M’zab Valley is also a popular and famous area with its desert cities like Ghardaia which has the most amazing architecture.

When Should You Visit?

Being a large country the climate in Algeria can be quite varied from one end of the country to the other. The southern parts of Algeria are in the Sahara and hence very arid and hot. The coastal regions experience a climate typical of the Mediterranean – hot and dry summers and mild and wet winters. Inland are mountainous regions which are usually far cooler, especially on the higher ground.
