Oran is the second largest city in Algeria and is situated on the north-western coast of the country, on the Mediterranean Sea. Oran is an attractive city with ornate architecture, plenty of hotels and restaurants, culture and nightlife to enjoy.

Flights to Oran

There are no direct flights to Oran Es-Senia Airport (airport code: ORN) from the UK, but you can get here by making just one connection, usually in France. Air Algerie, Aigle Azur, and Air Mediterranee all have flights to Oran from Paris, and you can get to Paris on numerous airlines from the UK such as British Airways, and Air France. The Oran Airport is less than 10 miles outside of the city centre so once your flight to Oran arrives you’ll only have a short transfer.

Oran Tourist Attractions

The coastal setting on the Mediterranean makes Oran an attractive and appealing destination where you can combine the seafront attractions with culture. There aren’t too many specific tourist attractions in Oran, but if you come to stay in the seaside resorts then the city centre makes a great place to visit for an evening or a day trip.

Fort Santa Cruz

Oran has three forts of which Fort Santa Cruz is the best known. The three forts are in fact connected via tunnels, making this one large defence system.

Fort Santa Cruz is set up on a hillside overlooking Oran and was built between 1577 and 1604 by the Spaniards. If you look up at the fort you can see the small Santa Cruz Chapel, just a little way down the hill from the fort, and this is a catholic pilgrimage site with its huge statue of the Virgin Mary.

The Kasbah

Like many other North African cities the old quarter of Oran is called the Kasbah and it’s a popular part of the city for visiting tourists. The atmosphere is completely different in the Kasbah compared to some of the more modern areas of Oran making this a worthwhile visit and a step back in time.

Landmarks in Oran

Oran has been occupied by several different cultures in its history, most notably the French, but also the Ottomans, and there are numerous remnants from these different periods in the architecture of the city.

The Great Synagogue of Oran was built in 1880 for the Jewish population and has mixes of Mudejar and Moorish architecture. It was confiscated at the end of the French rule and changed into a mosque. Another religious landmark of Oran is St Mary’s Cathedral. It also has similar architectural influences and is best known for its detailed brickwork and mosaics on the façade.

Front de Mer

The seafront, or Front de Mer as it’s locally known, is a popular spot for both tourists and locals in Oran. It runs along the coastline, fronting the city centre, and is a nice place to walk by day and night thanks to the lovely seaside views of the Mediterranean. This is also a hotspot for Oran’s nightlife as there are bars and clubs all along it.

When Should You Visit Oran?

Oran has a warm Mediterranean climate with only a little rainfall in the summer. Average high temperatures between June and September range from 27 to 31.6C, peaking in August. Winters are mild, dropping only to an average high of 16C in January, but most of the city’s rain falls over the winter.
