Places in Angola
Angola is an attractive and friendly country to visit, situated in south central Africa with a long Atlantic Ocean coastline, this may be a good alternative to some of the busier African travel hotspots such as Kenya and South Africa.
The capital and largest city, Luanda (airport code: LAD), is where international flights to Angola land. Flights to Angola from the UK are indirect with at least one connection. Airlines offering flights to Angola with one or two stops include South African Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, TAP Air Portugal, Lufthansa, and British Airways. These airlines fly via their home country except for British Airways which flies via Johannesburg or Addis Ababa.
The Tourist Attractions of Angola
Although Angola is an attractive alternative to some of the busier African countries, tourists looking for life’s luxuries will be disappointed here. Angola is a poor nation and does not have a heavily developed tourist infrastructure. This means that Angola is a good alternative, but only if you’re looking for a more accurate experience of African life.
If you can speak Portuguese you will go a long way in Angola as this is the official language. Because the people are poor, very few have had the opportunity to learn other languages and so you’ll be hard pushed to find English speaking individuals in many parts of the country.
Luanda
Luanda is the capital and largest city of Angola. This is situated on the Atlantic coast, towards the north of the country. For many visitors Luanda is their primary destination and one of the only places in the country where you’ll find high class hotels, an excellent range of restaurants and a club or two.
Luanda has an attractive bay and some nice beaches to enjoy if you’re looking for a spot for sun-bathing, especially Mussulo Island. Here you’ll find palm trees, water sports and more.
Scenery in Angola
Angola also offers attractive scenery. Places like the Bicuari National Park and the mountains of Lubango are good examples. Probably the best way to see more of Angola is to join a tour. These tours can take you to all the best places including Kissama National Park, a few hours from Luanda as well as other places of scenic beauty around Angola including Kalandula Falls, Conde Hot Springs and Ruacana Falls. Kissama National Park has been recently re-stocked with animals so presents good opportunities to see wildlife.
There are also plains, deserts and beaches to see, interesting tribes people to meet, and canyons, waterfalls and gorges to visit.
When Should You Visit Angola?
Angola has a climate which may be best described as equatorial and tropical especially in Luanda as there is only very slight variation in the temperatures across the year and rainfall is low. The capital city has hot and humid weather and between June and October there is essentially no rainfall at all. The rest of the year there is minimal rainfall, and the wet season is very short lasting just in March and April. Temperatures and rainy seasons vary across the country and are greatly influenced by the prevailing winds.
