Luanda is the capital and largest city of the south central African country of Angola. Located in the north west of the country, Luanda is a coastal city and the main entry point for the rest of the country.

Flights to Luanda from the UK are welcomed in the Luanda Airport (airport code: LAD). Your journey to Luanda from the UK will be indirect with one or two stops. Choose from airlines such as British Airways, TAP Air Portugal, Lufthansa, South African Airways, and Ethiopian Airlines which provide one or two stop flights to Luanda from the UK. Flight routes differ according to the airlines but most fly via their home country. British Airways, however, flies to Luanda via Johannesburg or Addis Ababa.

The Tourist Attractions of Luanda

When compared to some other African destinations, Luanda, and Angola in general, does not have a well developed tourist infrastructure. Having said this, as the capital city, Luanda does offer a range of high class hotels, nice beaches, restaurants, shops and more so may be preferable for some visitors in comparison to the more developed African cities.

Historical Luanda

Angola was a Portuguese overseas territory for hundreds of years from the 16th century right up until 1975 and hence the country is very Portuguese in nature. Portuguese is the first language and you’ll find that English is not very commonly spoken, therefore if you can learn a few words of Portuguese it will go a long way!

Luanda was founded by the Portuguese in 1575 and became an important administrative centre with a cosmopolitan feel, and there are remains of these times still to be seen in the city today.

Old Luanda, called Baixa de Luanda, is the lower part of the city and is centred around the port. This is a nice area with a range of old colonial buildings and narrow streets. Beyond the port, and overlooking Luanda Island is the old Fort San Miguel, built by the Portuguese in 1576. This actually became a town in its own right and was well protected from the outside world with large, thick walls.

Reconstruction of Luanda

As you wander around Luanda you’re likely to see much evidence of reconstruction going on. The city and the rest of Angola has been a far more stable and safe place since the end of the Angolan Civil War in 2002, and when the war finished a period of reconstruction and development began across the country. Amongst these developments will be a new airport for Luanda and roads will be widened and improved as the quality of these at present varies, especially once outside Luanda.

Mussulo Island

One of the top destinations in Luanda for visitors is Mussulo Island. This island is just a short distance from the city and can be reached by boat. It features tropical beaches with palm and coconut trees, nice waters and an assortment of water sports too. This is undoubtedly the best location if you’re looking for some beachside relaxation!

When Should You Visit Luanda?

Luanda has a hot and humid climate which is tropical in nature so there’s little variation in the temperatures across the year. Being south of the equator, summer is December to February and winter is June to August, though this doesn’t make a great deal of difference! Summer highs are around 31C and winter highs around 24C. Luanda is a very dry city with hardly any rainfall throughout the year apart from in March and April.
