The Republic of Benin is a West African country, bordering with Burkina Faso, Niger, Togo and Nigeria. Tourists will find that Benin has much to offer, from ruins, to national parks, to wildlife, to Voodoo!

International flights to Benin are welcomed in the Benin’s international airport in the capital city Cotonou (airport code: COO). Flights to Benin from the UK are indirect with at least one stop-over. Airlines such as Royal Air Maroc, Afriqiyah Airways and Air France offer one stop flights to Benin from the UK. Flights routes differ according to the airlines but most flights from the UK will be via their home countries.

Entry to the country is only granted if you can provide proof at the airport that you have had a Yellow Fever inoculation.

The Tourist Attractions of Benin

Of great advantage for tourists coming to Benin is the fact that this is one of the most stable countries in this part of Africa. This means tourists should be able to travel with relatively safety and security and if you can speak French you will go a long way as this is the official language of Benin.

Porto-Novo

Porto-Novo is the capital city of Benin and second largest city in the country, though when compared to the busyness of Cotonou (the largest city) Porto-Novo is a welcome break. There’s a lot of Portuguese influence here – the city was actually named by the Portuguese in the 1500’s. Attractions include the Musee Ethnographique de Porto Novo which delves into the lives of past kings. Another museum is Musee Honme, better known as Palais Royal du Roi Toffa (the Royal Palace of King Toffa). The Ouando district of the city is well known for its large market and good nightlife.

Cotonou

The largest city of Benin is Cotonou, and this is also the location of the country’s international airport. Situated on the coast, this is a port town and a bust and bustling place. Although Porto-Novo is the official capital, Cotonou is the de facto capital of Benin. Landmarks and attractions include the colourful Cotonou Cathedral and the Central Mosque.

Grand Popo

West along the coast from Cotonou is the popular beach resort town of Grand Popo. The beach is the main feature, but the town offers a nice break from the busier cities and gives visitors a better taste for some of the culture of Benin.

Abomey

Inland is the town of Abomey. This was once a capital of the ancient Dahomey kingdom and features some of the most historically significant traditional sites in West Africa, the royal palaces. The Royal Palaces were inscribe on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985 and were endangered at that time. Luckily now their status is no longer endangered.

Pendjari National Park

In north western Benin is the Pendjari National Park. Named after the Pendjari River, the park is best known for its wildlife which includes hippos, lions, buffalos, elephants, monkeys and antelopes and a substantial bird population – over 300 species.

When Should You Visit Benin?

Benin has a hot and humid climate with two rainy seasons and two dry seasons. The main rains fall between April and late July and a lesser rainy season is from late September to November. The hottest time is during the main dry season which is from December to April. If staying on the coast expect higher temperatures here than further inland. Cotonou, for example, has an average maximum temperature of 31C (89F).
