Gaborone is the capital and largest city of Botswana, a country in southern Africa. The city is located just 9 miles from the border with South Africa, in the south east of the country
Travelling to Gaborone (airport code: GBE) from the UK can be done through numerous airlines offering indirect flights. Virgin Atlantic Airways, South African Airways and British Airways offer travellers flights to Gaborone from the UK with one connection via Johannesburg. Other airlines such as Lufthansa, Iberia and Qatar Airways provide flights to Gaborone with two connections from the UK with the second stop via Johannesburg.
The Tourist Attractions of Gaborone
Gaborone may surprise some tourists who are expecting older and run down city buildings because Gaborone is surprisingly modern. The city centre was built in just 3 years, prior to the country’s independence from the United Kingdom in 1966.
Although Gaborone is the economic and political hub of Botswana, it does lack somewhat in terms of tourist attractions, and the modernism which the city is famous for may be unappealing to many visitors who are expecting to see something completely different! However, Gaborone is the main entry point for international flights into the country, so the city is a good gateway to the rest of Botswana. The main tourist hotspot in Botswana is the city of Maun, though before you get on a plane to travel to Maun, spend a few days in Gaborone to see what makes this one of Africa’s fastest growing cities.
University of Botswana
The University of Botswana has its main campus in Gaborone. Just the university alone wouldn’t make a very good tourist attraction, but the fact that the campus features the city’s golf course, a stadium, and the National Museum and Art Gallery, gives tourists a good reason to visit!
National Assembly
The National Assembly and other government buildings are at the end of the ‘Main Mall’. The Main Mall was built as part of the city’s original construction back in 1966, and acts like a British High Street, with banks, shops, offices and more lining it. The War Memorial, at the centre of the government buildings, is a popular meeting spot and was built in memory of the 300 Botswana people who died during WW2. The other statue here is of Botswana’s first president, Sir Seretse Khama.
Kgale Hill
One of the most popular spots in Gaborone is Kgale Hill. This is one of the largest hills in Botswana, and is popular for its fantastic city and Dam views. The climb to the top is not too strenuous, taking less than an hour, and there are three different routes you can choose to hike. Beware of the cheeky baboons living at the top, and also keep an eye out for a pair of nesting black eagles.
Gaborone Game Reserve
The Gaborone Game Reserve is only small, but its proximity to Gaborone, and therefore easy access, makes this the third most visited reserve in the country. If you have a rental car you can drive yourself around the good network of roads. There are many birds here, as well as wildebeest, zebra, rhino, ostriches and more.
Mokolodi Nature Reserve
Six miles from Gaborone is Mokolodi Nature Reserve. You can stay here in self catering chalets, take a game drive and see many of the park’s species, track endangered white rhino, or go on an elephant walk!
When Should You Visit Gaborone?
Gaborone has a sub-tropical climate which means there are warm to hot temperatures all year round. Being in the Southern Hemisphere, summer is from December to February, and January I the hottest month with an average high of 35.8C (96F) and low of 21.8C (71F). Summer is also the wettest time of the year, so for milder temperatures and very little rain, winter may be a better time to visit.
