Botswana is a landlocked country in Southern Africa and is situated just north of South Africa. Botswana is becoming a major player in the African tourist industry and has a number of great game reserves as well as being famous for its diamond mines.

The main gateway for international flights is the capital city, Gaborone (airport code: GBE) Flights from the UK to Botswana are offered through a number of airlines though there are no direct flights from London and hence all will involve one or two connections. One stop flights are with Virgin Atlantic, South African Airways, BMI and British Airways, all flying via Johannesburg. Alternatively TAP Air Portugal, Iberia, Lufthansa, Emirates, Air Zimbabwe and Egyptair all offer two stop flights.

On reaching Gaborone, some visitors prefer to get on a plane go north across Botswana to the town of Maun. Maun is one of the Botswana’s biggest hotspots and you can catch a flight to here from the capital city.

The Tourist Attractions of Botswana

Gaborone

Although the capital and largest city of Botswana, Gaborone does not offer a lot of tourist attractions and for many visitors it is used as the gateway to the rest of Botswana. Many visitors travel north to Maun, though if you have a day to spare before your onward travel you could visit the Gaborone Game Reserve or the Mokolodi Game Reserve where you have the chance to meet a cheetah!

Maun

Maun may only be a village, but it has grown to be one of Botswana’s most important destinations for the country’s tourism industry. Maun is the gateway to Botswana’s major national parks and game reserves and the famous Okavango Delta. Maun itself also offers the Maun Game Reserve and this is within walking distance of the village. There are also hotels and other places to stay here, as well as bars and various dining opportunities.

Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta is a very popular and ecologically important part of Botswana, which should definitely be seen by all visitors to the country. The Delta offers inland waterways which are accessible by boat, and this is an excellent way to explore the area and to see much of the wildlife, bird life and plant life. The Moremi Game Reserve is close by, or a little further away is the impressive Chobe National Park.

Chobe National Park

One of the best places in Botswana, and possibly the whole of Africa, to see wildlife is the Chobe National Park in the north west of the country. This has the largest concentration of elephants out of all the national parks in Africa and also presents great opportunities to see many other mammals such as leopards, lions, buffalo and antelope.

If you’re visiting Chobe you should also take advantage of the proximity to the world’s most spectacular waterfall, Victoria Falls, which is on the border of nearby Zambia and Zimbabwe, a journey of about 37 miles (60km).

When Should You Visit Botswana?

The climate in Botswana is sub tropical and although the temperatures are hot, the country does not get unbearably so. During the summer (December to March) the average temperature is about 26C across the country as a whole, though this is also the wetter period. The dry season runs from April to October or November and dust storms can be common during this time.
