Maun Tourist Attractions

The Okavango Delta

The nearby Okavango Delta is the main tourist attraction in Maun, and there are countless safari tours available. The natural features of the delta make it a wet oasis near the Kalahari Desert, and a popular place for seeing Botswana wildlife. How you visit the delta is up to you. Most safaris are done with 4x4 vehicles, either self-drive or as part of an organized group, but you can also get charter flights for a quicker trip. By car it's about a 2 and a half hour drive to the delta.

Maun Educational Park

To see some wildlife a little closer to town, the Maun Educational Park is within walking distance of the middle of town. There are 4 mapped trails where you can walk through the park to see giraffe, zebra, warthog and wildebeest.

Nhabe Museum

Filled with historical and cultural exhibits, as well as wildlife displays, the Nhabe Museum is the only such museum in north-west Botswana. Local artwork is also on display, and you can buy handicrafts at the gift shop. The building is an old WWII surveillance post built by the British. The museum is closed on Sundays, and located on Sir Seretse Khama Rd.

Moremi Game Preserve

Located north of Maun, the Moremi Game Preserve is the closed wildlife park to the city and offers an excellent chance to see many local animals. You can drive through the park, or take a traditional canoe tour in a dug-out boat called a mokoro. If you really want to go on safari, there are other parks in the area as well. The Central Kalahari Game Reserve, and the Nxai Pan National Park are also within easy distance of Maun.

When Should You Visit Maun?

It's hot in Maun for most of the year, over 30C (86F) with highs in October reaching 35C (95F). More comfortable weather is found in June and July, around 25C (77F). Rain isn't usually a problem in Maun as it's a very dry country but the summers have very little rain, which adds to their suitability for travel. October and November should be avoided due to heat and higher humidity.
