The Tourist Attractions of Burkina Faso

Formerly known as Upper Volta, Burkina Faso was renamed to its current name in 1984, and means the ‘land of upright people’.

Although not really recognised as a tourist destination, Burkina Faso is actually an excellent introduction to Africa for many visitors. Only a small number (when compared to countries like Kenya) of visitors come here every year, but this is one of the safest and friendliest countries on the continent, so should seriously be considered as an alternative to some of the more popular, and hence busier, African countries.

Ouagadougou

Ouagadougou is the capital and largest city of Burkina Faso, as well as being the main entry point for international visitors to the country.

This is a busy city, with a high population and many poor people, and while you’re safer here than many other cities, if you’re white you may draw attention to yourself! Try not to display your wealth and keep items such as cameras hidden away and unobvious.

The city has a variety of attractions and architecture. The Grand Mosque, for example is quite striking, yet plain in its outside colour and decoration; similarly, Ouagadougou Cathedral. There’s also the National Museum of Music, the National Museum of Burkina Faso and the Moro-Naba Palace.

National Parks

Burkina Faso has two national parks, the Kabore Tambi National Park, and the W National Park.

Kabore Tambi National Park was established in 1976 as the Po National Park but it was renamed in 1991 in honour of the park ranger who was killed by poachers. This park follows the path of the Nazinon River.

W National Park is transborder park which is mainly situated in the neighbouring country of Niger, but also extends into Benin and Burkina Faso. The name ’W’ comes from the fact that the park follows the meandering River Niger which forms a ‘w’ shape! W National Park is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is best known for its large species of mammals. Animals include cheetahs, leopards, lions, hippos, elephants, buffalo, aardvarks and baboons, as well as some of the last remaining wild African Elephants and the last wild population of West African Giraffes.

When Should You Visit Burkina Faso?

The climate of Burkina Faso is mainly tropical and the country has three seasons. These are the wet season, which usually runs from May or June to October, when temperatures are also high. The warm and dry season is during the winter, November to March. There’s also a hot and dry season between March and May.
