Bujumbura Tourist Attractions
On first glance, visitors may wonder what there is to see and do in Bujumbura because on the surface, it seems tourist attractions are lacking. True enough, Bujumbura is not teeming with these attractions, but if you look a little closer you’ll find they are there! The appeal of this city is that it’s not too over the top, and hence gives visitors a true to life African experience in this, one of the ten poorest countries in the world.
Bujumbura City Centre
Bujumbura was just a small village in the late 1800’s and began to grow after becoming a military post for German East Africa. The city centre is where the colonial town began and although there is not much evidence of history here, the large market and the National Stadium are very important in the everyday lives of the locals, and popular with tourists too.
Museums in Bujumbura
Bujumbura has a couple of museums, the Burundi Geological Museum and the Musee Vivant. The latter is a living museum situated near the lake and has beautiful gardens, cabins and huts, plus a bird centre with local species, and a herpetologic centre with reptiles and snakes.

When Should You Visit Bujumbura?
Being situated so close to the equator, Bujumbura has an equatorial climate, however the city is not as hot as some cities at this latitude because of its elevation. The whole of the country is located on a high plateau, and Bujumbura itself is at an elevation of 774 metres (2,539 feet). The equatorial climate means there is little temperature variation in the city across the year, though there are two wet seasons which visitors are best to avoid – between February and May, and September and November.
