Though it's not the capital, Douala is the largest city in Cameroon and it is the economic port for the country. Douala is mainly an industrial city but you'll find a few good attractions for sight-seeing too.

Flights to Douala

Flights to Douala arrive at the Douala International Airport (airport code: DLA) which is just 6 miles from the city. There are no direct flights to Douala from the UK but you can connect either through a European or other African city. Ethiopian Airlines, Air France, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic Airways, Swiss, Kenya Airways, and BMI are options. Swiss Air has a European connection, flying via Zurich, or an example of an African connection is with Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa.

Douala Tourist Attractions

Douala Water Park

There is no place better to cool off than a water park, and you can find slides and rides for the whole family here at the Douala Water Park!

Douala-Edea Reserve

The Douala-Edea Reserve is a small wildlife park not far from Douala and it’s home to a diverse number of African animals. You’ll find species such as the forest elephant, chimpanzee, antelopes, and water animals like the manatee and dolphin along the Sanaga River.

Korup National Park

North of Douala is a larger rainforest park that is probably the best known in the country. The drive there can be a bit of a challenge as some of the roads aren't paved but the beautiful landscape once you are there makes it worth the trip. More than 400 species of bird live in the park area, as well as populations of monkeys, chimpanzees, and many kinds of reptiles. You can walk through the park, or take a boat tour that goes through the mangroves and smaller rivers of the area.

Mount Cameroon

Mount Cameroon isn't just a mountain, it’s also an active volcano. That makes it twice as interesting as a tourist attraction in Douala. You can take a hike right to the top, but because the path doesn't wind around the mountain, you'll need to be in good shape to handle the rather steep ascent. There are a lot of steps carved into the rock to help you along your way.

Douala Museum

The Douala Museum is a historical museum in the south-west part of the city where you can see more about Cameroon's history, particularly the Bamoun and Bamileke people. It's housed in the city hall building, and there are several collections of artwork, carvings and sculptures.

Bonaberi Bridge

Douala is divided by the Wouri River, and the Bonabei Bridge is the main crossing point. There are some pedestrian walkways around the bridge, and it's a nice spot to get some views of the river.

When Should You Visit Douala?

It's generally hot through the year in Douala though not excessively so. Unfortunately, the coolest months are also the wettest ones, so you have to judge your timing according to your own sight-seeing preferences. Between February and May, it will reach around 27C (81F) but it will drop to 25C (77F) in July and August. July, August and September have the highest rainfall for the year.
