Places in Cameroon
Situated in Western Africa, Cameroon is a popular tourist destination due to its variety of attractions on offer – coastal resorts, game reserves, national parks, scenery and cities are what makes Cameroon what it is.
For flights from the UK to Cameroon you have a couple of choices as to where you want to land. The country’s most major international airport is located at Douala, which is Cameroon’s largest city and is situated on the coast. This is where the majority of international visitors will land. Douala International Airport (airport code: DLA) welcomes flights from the UK with Royal Air Maroc flying from London via Casablanca in Morocco, or with Air France via Paris.
Alternatively if you prefer to get a flight to Cameroon’s capital, Yaounde (airport code: YAO) you can fly from London Heathrow on a one stop flight with Air France via Paris, Virgin Atlantic or Kenya Airways via Nairobi, or Swiss via Zurich.
The Tourist Attractions of Cameroon
Douala
Douala is the commercial capital of Cameroon and the largest city in the country. Situated centrally on the coast of Cameroon visitors will find there are good hotels, restaurants and other places to eat and drink in the city. The atmosphere is very cosmopolitan and Douala is said to be the most expensive place to live in the whole of Africa.
All along this section of coast there are some nice beach resorts. Towns with good beaches include Kribi and Limbe.
Mount Cameroon
Mount Cameroon is also on the coast. This is Western Africa’s tallest mountain which is actually an active volcano which was last active in 1999 and 2000. The hike to the peak is a popular pastime and can be achieved by most able bodied visitors as no special equipment is required. If you’re here at the end of January/beginning of February you may catch the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope, which is a 26 mile marathon up the mountain and down again.
Yaounde
The capital of Cameroon is the inland city of Yaounde. This relatively small city still has several attractions of interest to visitors including the Cameroon National Museum and the Cameroon Art Museum. There’s also the cathedral and the presidential palace to see.
Natural Attractions
Cameroon may not be the first country to spring to mind when thinking of game reserves and safari holidays, though in actual fact the country does have a lot to offer and may actually be a good alternative to some of the busier African countries.
The Dja Faunal Reserve is a very important reserve which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and holds more than 100 mammal species and 300 bird species plus there are over 1500 different plat species here too.
Cameron has an impressive nine National Parks which all offer visitors something different to see. Parks in the north of the country are the most visited, though also consider Korup National Park and Nki National Park for a different experience.
When Should You Visit Cameroon?
In the main Cameroon has two seasons, wet and dry. There is variation across the country, but in the coastal city of Douala, for example, there is not a great difference in the temperature range across the year because of Cameroon’s proximity to the equator. Generally speaking the wet season is from March to October and the dry season is from October to March.
