Yaounde is the capital and second largest city of Cameroon. Unlike the largest city, Douala, Yaounde is not marketed as tourist destination, but it does still offer some attractions for visitors and a quieter atmosphere to that found in Douala that will appeal to some tourists more than others.

Flights to Yaounde

There is an airport for flights to Yaounde, the Yaounde Nsimalen International Airport (airport code: NSI) but there are very limited options for flights to Yaounde from London. Basically, it's just Air France, stopping once in Paris. For more options, fly into the Douala International Airport (code: DLA) instead, and take a 3 hour bus ride into Yaounde. Taking that route, you could fly with British Airways or Virgin Atlantic, both with one connection in Nairobi.

Yaounde Tourist Attractions

Though not readily thought of as one of Cameroon’s popular tourist destinations, Yaounde does actually have some attractions to offer and if you’re looking for a cultural experience the city is a good place to find it.

For visiting tourists there are a number of hotels in the city centre, as well as restaurants and a few nightclubs so this isn’t a completely quiet city! Add in the shopping opportunities and you can soon see that there’s more to Yaounde than at first meets the eye! Here are some of the attractions and landmarks to look out for:

Yaounde is home to both a cathedral and a basilica. The Notre Dames des Victoires Cathedral is the seat of the Archdiocese of Yaounde while the Mary Queen of the Apostles Basilica, which was completed and dedicated in 2006, was built on the site of the first church to be built by the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit in Cameroon.

Several museums in Yaounde are housed within city landmarks, so visiting these museums actually gives you two attractions in one! The Cameroon Art Museum is housed within a former Benedictine Monastery, and the Cameroon National Museum is housed within the former presidential palace. Another museum to visit is the Afhemi Museum.

If you’re dying to see some of Africa’s wildlife but haven’t made it out to one of Cameroon’s national parks you could always visit the Mvog Betsi Zoo in Yaounde. It’s not quite the same of course, but here you can see primates and lions, and if you’re travelling with children they will enjoy the children’s playground at the zoo too.

For shopping you have to visit the markets. There are two large markets, Mfoundi and Mokolo where you can buy all manner of goods, but even if you’re not buying, it’s quite a sight to simply wander around them and soak in the atmosphere!

Finally you might like to venture up into the hills of Mont Febe as from here you can enjoy some views over Yaounde and beyond.

When Should You Visit Yaounde?

Temperature-wise Yaounde stays fairly constant throughout the year because it’s located close to the equator, but being at altitude it is cooler than other cities at this latitude. There’s a wet and dry season, but if you want to visit during the dry season you only have a couple of months to do so as the wet period is from February to November with a little less rain in the months of July and August. Average high temperatures are between 27 and 29C (81 – 84F) across the year.
