Flights to Cape Verde

As an island nation, Cape Verde has many airports, including a total of three that handle international flights to Cape Verde. These are the Praia International Airport (airport code: RAI), the Sao Pedro International Airport (VXE), and the Amilcar Cabral International Airport (airport code: SID), also called the Sal International Airport since it is found on Sal Island. The last of the three is still the major airport for international flights to Cape Verde though, and handles most of the air traffic. Flights to Cape Verde are very limited, regardless of which airport you choose, however routes are being added all the time. United Airlines has a flight to Cape Verde that arrives at the Sal airport after making one connection in Lisbon. The other option is TACV Cabo Verde Airlines. Their route has 2 connections, the first in Dublin and the second in Lisbon. Thomson Airways now also offers a flight to Cape Verde’s Sal Airport from Gatwick, Manchester, and Birmingham.

Cape Verde Tourist Attractions

Cape Verde was a Portuguese colony right up until 1975 when it became the Republic of Cape Verde. The Portuguese had discovered the islands back in the 15th century, and it’s only been in the last decade or so that Cape Verde’s great natural resources (beaches and climate in particular) are being tapped into by the tourism industry. The number of visitors is increasing year on year and more hotels are being built to cater to this increasing demand. If you visit Cape Verde right now you’ll be getting in before the beaches get too crowded!

Of the ten islands nine are inhabited and each one offers something a little different to the last. It’s worthwhile travelling around the islands a bit if you want a true Cape Verdean cultural experience!

Sal

The island of Sal is well known because it’s home to Cape Verde’s main international airport. It also features lovely soft, white sandy beaches and for tourists it offers a number of hotels and places to stay. These include a new addition, the 1000 room Hotel Riu Funana which is the largest hotel in West Africa. The town and beach of Santa Maria is one of the top tourist destinations on Sal, though most of the former fishing villages now offer hotels and restaurants too.

Santiago

The island of Santiago is the largest of the Cape Verde islands and is where the capital city Praia is located. To experience some of the culture and history of Cape Verde this is a good place to visit and landmarks include the Ethnographic Museum, the Presidential Palace, and the old town hall.

Santo Antao and Sao Vicente

The two islands situated at the north western end of Cape Verde’s archipelago are Santo Antao and Sao Vicente and they’re linked together by a regular ferry service. These two islands offer something a little different. For example, there’s hiking in the pine forests of the inner mountain range that runs down the centre of Santo Antao, or scuba diving off the coast.

Sao Vicente is home to the town of Mindelo, Cape Verde’s cultural capital and a popular holiday destination too.

When Should You Visit Cape Verde?

The big appeal of Cape Verde is that the islands enjoy year round warm weather and it’s also very dry, so in essence you could visit at any time of the year!
