Flights to Sal
Places in Cape Verde
Sal is one of the islands of the Republic of Cape Verde and it’s located in the northern group of islands that are called Barlavento. Home to the nation’s main international airport Sal has built up quite a tourism industry and offers wonderful beaches and great weather.
Flights to Sal
The main international airport for Cape Verde is on Sal Island. The airport is officially named the Amilcar Cabral International Airport (airport code: SID) but most locals just call it the Sal International Airport. The airport is about a 20 minute drive away from the island's capital city of Espargos. Coming from London, there are only a few airlines offering flights to Sal. Cape Verde's own airline, TACV Cabo Verde Airlines has flights to Sal with 2 stops en- route (Dublin, then Lisbon). United Airlines also has an option for flights to Sal, stopping once in Lisbon. More recently Thomson Airways have started offering flights to Sal from Gatwick, Manchester and Birmingham, which is likely to be the top choice for many visitors travelling from the UK.
Sal Tourist Attractions
Formerly called Llana by the Portuguese who discovered Sal in 1460 the island’s name was changed when large salt deposits were found here – Sal means salt in Portuguese! Salt has been collected here for many years but tourism is now becoming the mainstay of the economy. This is both good and bad news for visiting tourists – good because there are more hotels, restaurants and other facilities being built, but bad because Sal is only going to get busier!
Espargos
Meaning ‘asparagus’ the capital of Sal is Espargos and it’s situated in the centre of the island. The town grew around the developing airport and became the capital of Sal. This isn’t really a tourist destination but does have a few hotels if you don’t want to stay on the coast, and if you want to see a typical Cape Verdean town, Espargos may be worth visiting.
Santa Maria
Santa Maria is definitely the main tourist resort on Sal and it’s growing all the time as demand increases for this once small fishing village. You’ll find plenty of excellent hotels here, lining the beaches that are graced with lovely soft white sand, and there are plenty of places to eat, shops and other tourist facilities that you’d expect from a growing modern resort. Although there is construction going on, Santa Maria still offers a relaxed and laid back atmosphere.
Other Villages on Sal
Santa Maria is the best known destination on Sal though there are several other former fishing villages that are now growing into popular tourist destinations too. Murdeira is one that’s been growing over the last decade or so. Palmeira is home to Sal’s port and has some bars and restaurants, but currently no accommodation.
When Should You Visit Sal?
Sal is a destination that you can visit year round because the island enjoys 350 days of sunshine per year! The temperatures stay warm all year, with average highs usually in the mid to high 20’s C. From August to mid October is considered the rainy season, though the amount of rainfall is so low that this usually isn’t a problem for most visitors.
