Bangui is the capital and largest city of the Central African Republic, in central Africa. The city is situated on the River Ubangi which forms the border with the neighbouring country of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The Bangui M’Poko International Airport (airport code: BGF) is where flights to Bangui will arrive. Flights to Bangui from the UK are indirect with one or two connections and are available through several airlines. Afriqiyah Airways offers travellers one stop flights to Bangui from the UK, while Kenya Airways and Virgin Atlantic Airways provide flights to the Central African Republic from the UK with two stops, first Nairobi and then Douala.

The Bangui Airport is very convenient for the city as it is located just 4 miles (7 kilometres) to the north west.

Bangui Tourist Attractions

Despite being the capital, Bangui is not heavy on tourist attractions. Visitors should remember that the Central African Republic is one of the poorest countries in the world and should not expect to find many of the luxuries of the western world here. Having said this, Bangui does offer a number of hotels and restaurants but these do not come as cheap as some African countries, rivalling prices in the West in some circumstances. For this reason, Bangui is not a good city to visit if you’re on a tight budget.

Bangui was founded in 1889 as a French colony, and was called Haut-Oubangui (meaning Upper Ubangi). The location of the city is unusual for a capital, being situated right on the border with another country, but the reason for locating it here is because the River Ubangi becomes un-navigable further upstream, so this was good location that could use the river for trade purposes.

Though only settled in its current form since 1889, archaeological excavations have actually discovered numerous Iron Age sites in and around the city of Bangui and these have been put on a tentative list for possible inclusion as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In terms of actual visitor attractions within Bangui there are only a few. The Boganda National Museum is located in the city, and this is the national museum of the Central African Republic. There are a large number (about a quarter of the population) of Roman Catholics in the country and so the Notre-Dame cathedral in Bangui is important to this group. Other attractions also include the Presidential Palace, which is also known as Bokassa Palace. The Triumphal Arch in the city is also dedicated to Bokassa, but compared to many triumphal arches around the world this one is really quite plain.

The Central Market is a popular and lively place to visit. You can pick up many different goods here though the market in the residential part of the city is said to be the largest. This residential area (3 miles / 5km) north of the city centre is where you will also find the nightlife of Bangui.

When Should You Visit Bangui?

Bangui has a tropical and somewhat equatorial climate which means that temperatures remain high throughout the year with little variation. Expect average daily high temperatures to rarely fall below 26.6 C (80F) throughout the year. The rainy season is from May to October.
