As the name of this country suggests, the Central African Republic is situated in central Africa. Often abbreviated to CAR, the Central African Republic is a landlocked country and was a territory of France until independence in 1960.

Flights to the Central African Republic land at the capital and largest city, Bangui (airport code: BGF). From the UK flights to the Central African Republic are indirect with either one or two stops depending on the airline. One stop flights to the Central African Republic from the UK are available through Afriqiyah Airways, or you can choose from Virgin Atlantic Airways and Kenya Airways who provide two stop flights to the Central African Republic from the UK via Nairobi and Douala.

Central African Republic Tourist Attractions

Since independence from France in 1960 the Central African Republic suffered years of forced government and mis-rule that eventually ended with a civilian government coming to power in 1993. Despite this step in the right direction, the country still has some troubles and there is political unrest currently in many rural parts of the Central African Republic. At this time, travel outside of the capital, Bangui, is not recommended. Attractions are detailed below, though please check the current status before you make any travel arrangements.

Tourism Infrastructure

The Central African Republic does have some tourist infrastructure, such as hotels and restaurants, but these are limited to the larger cities and tourists may be surprised at just how much these services cost. This is one of the poorest countries in the world, so if you do venture outside of the cities remember that the people are poor and you are not likely to find as many places to stay.

Bangui

The capital, and also the largest city of the Central African Republic is Bangui. Situated on the banks of the River Ubangi, the capital is essentially on the border with neighbouring country Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The main attractions of Bangui include the triumphal arch, and whilst no where near as impressive as some of the world’s other triumphal arches, the people are proud of it all the same. There is also the Presidential Palace to see, and the Central Market where you can buy a variety of goods.

Manovo-Gounda St Floris National Park

One of three national parks in the Central African Republic, St Floris is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was added to the list because of its great diversity of animal life. Unfortunately many species are under threat due to poachers, but the species that have featured prominently here include black rhinos, cheetahs, buffalos, leopards, gazelles, and elephants.

Dzanga Sangha National Reserve

In addition to the national parks is this national reserve which is covered in lowland rainforest. Visitors may see a variety of wildlife here too including chimpanzee and monkey species, western lowland gorillas, forest elephants, forest buffalos, bongos, and several species of hogs. There are two lodges in the reserve so you can visit and stay for several days in one of the lodges.

When Should You Visit Central African Republic?

The Central African Republic has a mainly tropical climate and lies just north of the equator. With the tropical climate the country remains hot all year round though there is a rainy and a dry season to think about. Winters are hot and dry, whilst summers are mild to hot, and wet.
