Located in Central Africa, the Republic of Chad is a landlocked country, and although there are numerous attractions here for tourists, travel to Chad at this time is not recommended.

The Foreign Office advises against tourists taking flights to Chad due to the current political turmoil, however, if travellers need to fly to Chad, flights are available to the capital city N’Djamena (airport code: NDJ). The only airline at this time offering flights to Chad from the UK is Air France, via one stop in Paris. Flights to Chad from Paris with Air France are available daily.

The Tourist Attractions of Chad

Although Chad does have some sites of interest, travel to this country unless absolutely essential, is not advised because of the political instability. Chad gained independence from France in 1960, and whilst other countries in this situation developed stable governments and economies, Chad has had problems ever since. The country has experienced a very long civil war and has resulted in producing one of the poorest countries in the world. This in itself could be dealt with if it weren’t for the fact that Chad is also one of the most corrupt countries in the world too.

N’Djamena

As the location for Chad’s international airport, N’Djamena is the main entry point for visitors to Chad. This is the capital and largest city in the country, though does not have too much to tempt the visitor to stay. Some of the attractions that are here have been damaged through the civil war, including the Chad National Museum which unfortunately lost many of its irreplaceable pieces through looting. The city’s cathedral has also been damaged, though remains impressive, and N’Djamena has many mosques to see too.

Lake Chad

Once one of the world’s largest lakes, the area of Lake Chad has been alarmingly reduced causing huge environmental concerns for Central Africa.

Chad takes its name from Lake Chad which it shares with Cameroon, Nigeria and Niger. The problem is that in such a dry region of the world demand for water is understandably very high, and being only a shallow water lake anyway, the lake is rapidly disappearing. This has of course led to tensions between the countries and the people living nearby, plus there is the threat to nature’s users of the lake too. Fishing is important here but if there’s no lake, there will be no fish.

If you can visit this area in the near future you should do so because Lake Chad may not be here for much longer. Visit the lake’s islands where you might see crocodiles and birdlife.

When Should You Visit Chad?

First of all wait until it is safe to do so! When it is safe you’ll find that Chad is hot all year round and has a dry climate because of its huge distance from any ocean. The north of the country, which is within the Sahara Desert, is the hottest and driest part of the country, whilst in the south there is actually a wet season, from May to October.
