Brazzaville is the capital city and also the largest in terms of population in the Republic of the Congo, Central Africa. Situated on the River Congo, Brazzaville is separated by the river from the capital of neighbouring Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kinshasa.

Flights to Brazzaville

There are two international airports in the Congo, one at the coastal city of Pointe Noire, and the other here in Brazzaville, though the Brazzaville Maya-Maya Airport (airport code: BZV) is the country’s major airport. Flights to Brazzaville from the UK are all indirect and will involve either one or two stops depending on the airline and the day of travel. Airlines offering flights to Brazzaville include British Airways, BMI, Air France, and Ethiopian Airlines, all of which connect through either Paris or Addis Ababa.

Brazzaville Tourist Attractions

Brazzaville is not instantly recognisable as a tourist destination and indeed the coastal city of Pointe Noire often wins out between the two in its bid to attract the tourists. However, when you scratch beneath the surface in Brazzaville you’ll find that actually there are a number of things to see and do here.

The infrastructure of Brazzaville has been left to deteriorate somewhat since the 1997 civil war. Before this time it was a thriving city but now more money is being spent on its redevelopment, hotels and restaurants are being built, and Brazzaville is beginning to get back its former glory. For tourists this means you may be a little surprised as to the condition of roads and transport, considering this is the capital city, but with new hotels being built Brazzaville is becoming a more and more comfortable city to visit.

Nightlife in Brazzaville

Brazzaville is also developing a fairly vibrant nightlife and has several bars and nightclubs on offer. Different themes, different crowds and different prices will no doubt reflect your decision as to which club you frequent, but choices include venues with live local bands, clubs with English, French, and/or American music, or bars with great views of the River Congo.

Main Sites in Brazzaville

So if you’re spending time in Brazzaville there are several major sites that you’ll want to visit. Built in 1949, St Anne’s Basilica is considered to be one of the most beautiful modern churches in the world and is well known for its green tiled roof. This church was designed by French man Roger Erell.

Several buildings in Brazzaville have the name ‘palace’, though these are not always perhaps what you would expect from a palace! There’s the Congressional Palace for example as well as the Palace of the People, which was the residence of governor generals. This is an attractive colonial building that was constructed in 1901.

The Sacre-Coeur Cathedral is popular for its views over the city, and one of the newest constructions is the Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza Memorial.

When Should You Visit Brazzaville?

As Brazzaville is situated so close to the equator the climate is very consistent year round and there’s little variation in the high and low temperatures. Like to the rest of the Congo Brazzaville does have a long rainy season, falling from September to May, and generally the wettest periods during this season are from March to May, and September to November. The dry season is between June and August.
