Congo Tourist Attractions

Brazzaville

The capital of the Republic of Congo is Brazzaville. This city is situated on the Congo River and despite having suffered a decade of neglect the city is now on the up again and benefiting from redevelopment. New hotels, restaurants, nightclubs and other services are opening up. Brazzaville itself may not appeal to too many visitors as a tourist destination, but if you’re entering on a flight to Congo this is where you’ll land and it’s well worth spending a day or two before moving on elsewhere.

Attractions in Brazzaville include the Brazzaville Zoo, St Anne’s Basilica, the Cathedral, several palaces, the market, and the Livingstone Falls.

Pointe Noire

Situated on the coast, Pointe Noire is the second largest city in the Congo. Meaning Black Point, the city is situated on a headland with Pointe Noire Bay to one side and the Atlantic Ocean to the other. Although Pointe Noire doesn’t have a long list of tourist attractions this city is often more popular than Brazzaville because of its coastal location. It is well known for its good beaches and great surfing opportunities.

Pointe Noire does have its own international airport served by airlines including Air France. Some visitors may find it easier to get a flight to the Congo directly to here, or transfer from Brazzaville.

Owando

If your travels take you to the more northern parts of the Congo, a visit to Owando is recommended. This is a new city and is being developed with both locals and tourists in mind as there are restaurants, hotels and other services being constructed here.

Lesio Louna Gorilla Reserve

Situated in Lefini, north of Brazzaville, is the Lesio Louna Gorilla Reserve. The top priority of the reserve is to protect gorillas in the Congo and the reserve can be visited on a day trip, or spend a little longer here staying at the tourist facilities that are provided at the research station.

When Should You Visit Congo?

With the equator dissecting the Congo the climate is definitely equatorial with little change across the year. However there is a wet and a dry season, the dry season being the shortest from just June to August. If you want to visit during the wet season try to avoid the wettest periods which are from March to May, and September to November.
