Democratic Republic of the Congo Tourist Attractions
Although the Democratic Republic of the Congo has not been known as Zaire for over a decade now it’s sometimes still referred to by its old name, however when you’re travelling within the country it’s best to always refer to it as DR Congo so as to distinguish it from the neighbouring Congo, and not cause offence.
Democratic Republic of the Congo National Parks
Its national parks are the main attraction for visitors to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, offering multiple opportunities to see not only wildlife but great scenery too. Five of the national parks have been recognised by UNESCO for their importance and are now World Heritage Sites too. The reason for this recognition is mainly because the parks are home to endangered species and so everything is being done to protect these species.
In the Garumba National Park is the last remaining population of wild northern white rhinoceros in the world, and the rare Mountain Gorilla can be found at Kahuzi-Biega National Park. You may also be able to see the Mountain Gorilla at the Virunga National Park, the first national park to be established in Africa, in 1925
There are not only endangered animals to see here in the Democratic Republic of the Congo though. You’ll have the chance to see many other species of animals and some great scenery at the same time – the Okapi Wildlife Reserve is home to a mammal called the okapi, close relatives to the giraffe, as well as the endangered forest elephant, and nomadic Mbuti pygmies.
Nyiragongo Volcano
To see more of the scenery in the Democratic Republic of the Congo you might like to visit the Nyiragongo Volcano. It’s situated in the east of the country and can be climbed if you are up to the 4 to 5 hour hike. If you can make the climb you’ll be rewarded with some great views and get to look inside the crater to see the lava lake.
The volcano is located close to the city of Gome, the tourist capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Not only is the city close to the volcano but it’s also nearby to Virunga National Park too.
