Situated in the west of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, on the Congo River, is Kinshasa. Kinshasa is DR Congo’s capital and largest city and though it’s had problems in the past the city is now being redeveloped and improved.

The Kinshasa N’djili International Airport (airport code: FIH) is one of the country’s major entry points. It’s located outside the city centre and is accessible by bus and taxi, and taxi’s take about an hour. From the UK flights to Kinshasa are indirect. Travel with British Airways via Johannesburg, or Air France via Paris. A flight to Kinshasa with BMI flies via Addis Ababa, while Kenya Airways connects through Nairobi. Kinshasa Tourist Attractions

Although Kinshasa is the capital and largest city of the Democratic Republic of Congo it doesn’t offer as much to tourists as some other capitals. It was once a thriving city but following the conflicts that have taken place in the country it has suffered from neglect and the infrastructure leaves a lot to be desired.

Kinshasa was founded in 1881 by Henry Morgan Stanley as a trading post, and was originally named Leopoldville in honour of Kind Leopold II of Belgium. In more recent history the city became famous for being the location of the famous ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ boxing match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman, competing for the World Heavyweight title.

There are some attractions in Kinshasa but no more than would warrant a stay of more than a day or two. The Kinshasa Museum may be worth checking out along with the Kinshasa Fine Arts Academy. Though many buildings are suffering from neglect there are a couple of skyscrapers one of which is home to one of the city’s top hotels, the Hotel Memling. For Kinshasa this hotel is well equipped with two restaurants, swimming pool, gym, internet access and more so may be a good choice while staying in the city.

The Kinshasa market, called Le marche des valeurs, means market of value and you can certainly pick up some well priced items here if you’re prepared to haggle. Like many other markets of this kind you should never pay the price first quoted to you as this will be highly inflated from what the seller actually expects to receive!

When Should You Visit Kinshasa?

Kinshasa has a tropical wet and dry climate which means the city is hot and mostly wet across the year. For the dry weather you’ll need to plan your visit to Kinshasa during what is the city’s winter: June, July and August as there is essentially no rain at this time. This is also the slightly cooler time of year, but with average highs of around 32 to 35C this can hardly be considered cool! Temperatures climb even further in the summer, hitting an average high of 26C from December through to April, and there are high amounts of rainfall during this time too.
