Places in Egypt
Situated on the Mediterranean Sea in the north of Egypt is the city of Alexandria. Alexandria is the second largest city in Egypt, and the country’s largest seaport so it’s economically important for Egypt, but it is also an ancient city that holds many attractions for tourists.
Flights to Alexandria
The two airports near Alexandria are the El Nouzha Airport (airport code: ALY) and the Borg el Arab Airport (code: HBE) but neither one offers a particularly substantial number of international flights to Alexandria. Coming from the UK, you are better off flying into Cairo and getting a bus into Alexandria from Cairo International Airport (code: CAI). Flights to Alexandria arriving in Cairo are available on many major airlines departing from London. British Midland, British Airways and Egyptair all offer non-stop flights. KLM stops once in Amsterdam, or Turkish Airlines will go via Istanbul.
Alexandria Tourist Attractions
Alexandria is a popular tourist destination but it has been overtaken by places like Cairo and Luxor for popularity. It’s an ancient city, though the number of ancient remains are limited when compared to Egypt’s other two tourist draws, so Alexandria does tend to get forgotten by many tourists. However, there’s still a lot to see here, and it’s a bustling city with not quite as many people as Cairo, so this may mean Alexandria appeals to some tourists more than others!
Ancient Monuments in Alexandria
If you’d like to explore the ancient history of Alexandria there are a couple of sites where this is possible. Pompey’s Pillar dates from Roman times and is a triumphal pillar the largest of its kind ever constructed outside of Rome or Constantinople. It was built in 297AD, and although named Pompey’s Pillar it was actually built during the reign of Roman emperor Diocletian. Alexandria also has a well preserved Roman amphitheatre and there’s a pink granite sphinx to see too. The theatre was built in the 2nd century AD and the surrounding site also includes remains of Roman baths.
Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa
The Catacombs in Alexandria are not an ancient attraction though they do have an ancient twist. The catacombs were created in the middle ages and are actually considered to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages. The ancient twist is the fact that they were built with Roman, Greek and Egyptian features and influences.
Montaza Palace
A more modern attraction of Alexandria is Montaza Palace. The palace now features a museum and extensive grounds with gardens, making this a popular tourist attraction. A smaller palace (Salamlek Palace) was built in 1892 and used as a lodge for hunting, while the main large palace was constructed in 1932 and has both Turkish and Florentine architecture. Today Salamlek Palace is a luxury hotel and the Montaza Palace is open to visitors as a museum of history and art. The grounds are a public park.
When Should You Visit Alexandria?
Alexandria is a city that you can pretty much visit at any time of the year as it’s warm and dry, and very sunny. From June to September temperatures are hot and there’s virtually no rainfall – the average high in these months ranges between 28.6 and 30.4C. If you prefer it a little cooler, spring and autumn are very nice, and while winters are warm this is when the rain falls.
