Though somewhat known as a resort town, there are a number of historical sites near Hurghada that you should plan on visiting as well as the beaches. Hurghada is located on the coast of the Red Sea in Egypt, and is a thoroughly modern city.

Flights to Hurghada

Flights to Hurghada arrive at the Hurghada International Airport (airport code: HRG), which is just 3 miles (5km) outside of the downtown area though there is no public transit between the two. Instead you can grab a taxi or shuttle bus to get you to and from the airport. When travelling from London, you have options for flights to Hurghada with either 1 or 2 connections. For a connection in Cairo, you can fly with either Egyptair or British Midland. Swiss Airlines also have a 1-stop flight to Hurghada that goes through Geneva instead. Lufthansa has transfers in Frankfurt and then Cairo.

Hurghada Tourist Attractions

Scuba Diving

There are several excellent dive sites along the shores near Hurghada, where you can see some local reefs as well as a number of relatively shallow shipwrecks. Some of the locations will need a boat to access but you can find plenty to see if you dive closer to the shores. You can even stay near the surface and see some of the reefs by snorkelling instead.

The Sahara Desert

Many people who want to explore the desert come to Hurghada to start their trips. Depending on the tour company, you can see the desert by jeep, motorcycle or even on the back of a camel. You can stay over several nights, or just spend an afternoon seeing the amazing sand dunes. There are many options to choose from to suit your adventure preferences. If you are going to venture into the desert, you should do so with an experienced guide or tour operator rather than head off into the sand alone.

The Beaches

As with most coastal cities, the beaches are a popular attraction for some sun and relaxation. The water of the Red Sea is warm during the summer months and there are several white sand beaches for sunbathing and swimming. Hurghada is actually a popular beach resort city, and many high-end resorts offer accommodations right on some of the best beaches. Along some of the beaches are restaurants, shops, and dance clubs.

Luxor

You can also visit Luxor as a day trip from Hurghada, where you can see the famous Valley of the Kings, Temple of Karnak and the Luxor Temple. It's a great city for seeing the classic Egyptian ruins and tombs. You can take a public bus from Hurghada to Luxor but it would be quicker to go in a rented car or with a tour group.

When Should You Visit Hurghada?

The best time to visit Hurghada will depend on what activities you intend to enjoy. You will want the warmer months of June through September for being out on the water. That's when it will reach around 33C (92F). On the other hand, spending time in the desert will usually be more pleasant during cooler months like January or February. Then the days will only be around 21C (70F).
