Home to some of the greatest ancient tourist attractions, the city of Luxor is up there with the world’s ‘must visit’ destinations. Situated in southern (Upper) Egypt, Luxor really is a spectacular place, with the Valley of the Kings, Luxor Temple, and its setting on the River Nile being just a few of the attractions here.

Flights to Luxor

The Luxor International Airport (airport code: LXR) has regular international service, though most scheduled flights to Luxor are coming via Cairo. Because of Luxor‘s popularity though, many charter airlines have began to offer direct flights to Luxor so these would be the best choice for convenience. EasyJet even goes to Luxor from Gatwick, or there are flights with Thomas Cook Airlines, Monarch, Thomson Airways, and with EgyptAir.

Luxor Tourist Attractions

While the capital of Egypt, Cairo, has the ancient pyramids on its doorstep, Luxor has equally well known and impressive ancient sites too. Luxor has in fact often been cited as the world’s greatest open air museum because of the quality and quantity of attractions here!

Thebes Necropolis

Luxor has been built around the ancient city of Thebes, so some of the main attractions are right in the heart of the modern day city of Luxor. The Thebes Necropolis is situated just a little way out, on the west bank of the Nile, across the river from Luxor. The necropolis was used for burials and as such there are a number of tombs here, as well as temples. In fact you’re advised to allow yourself several days to really make the most of the necropolis.

Valley of the Kings

Also on the west bank of the Nile is the Valley of the Kings, and the lesser known Valley of the Queens. The Valley of the Kings is where most of the pharaohs of Egypt were buried, such as the famous Tutankhamun, and many of the tombs are open to the public.

Luxor Temple

Luxor Temple is one of the major sights of the east bank. On the east bank life was lived whereas on the west bank the land was set aside mostly for burials and tombs. Luxor Temple is an ancient complex with some sections still quite well preserved. A mosque was built on top of some of the ruins though, during a time when the historical value of these kind of sites was not appreciated.

The Temple of Karnak is also popular and is famous for its huge columns that tower above you. Just next to the temple is the Karnak Open Air museum.

Luxor Museum

You may expect an extensive museum in Luxor, though in fact the emphasis is on quality not quantity here, and hence the Luxor Museum is well worth a visit. There are many antiquities from Luxor and the surrounding region including statuary found in a hidden part of Luxor Temple.

Luxor is also home to the Museum of Mummification; a recommended visit if you’ve ever wondered how did they do that!

When Should You Visit Luxor?

You won’t need to worry about rain in Luxor as there’s virtually none across the whole year, though you should worry about the extreme heat experienced in Luxor over the summer months. From May to September average highs go from 39 to 41.5C, making these months too hot for many tourists. October to April you can still enjoy warm to hot weather, without being unbearable – average highs are between 23C (in January), and 35C in October and April.
