Despite the name, Equatorial Guinea does not sit on the equator! It’s one of Africa’s smallest countries and is situated just north of the equator in Western Africa, bordering with Cameroon and Gabon.

Flights to Equatorial Guinea

Equatorial Guinea has two regions – the mainland, and a group of offshore islands. The capital, situated on Bioko island, is also home to the country’s main international airport, called the Malabo Island International Airport (airport code: SSG). Flights to Equatorial Guinea from the UK are indirect and, depending on the airline, have either one or two stops. Airlines offering one stop flights to Equatorial Guinea from the UK include Lufthansa, Iberia and Air France. There are a variety of flight routes but most airlines will offer flights from the UK via their home country.

Equatorial Guinea Tourist Attractions

Equatorial Guinea should be able to offer a lot to tourists with its prime location, and off shore islands adding interest. However, this is a very poor country and tourism hasn’t yet taken off thanks to the rule of a corrupt president for many years – infrastructure has not been developed at the rate of its neighbouring countries, and for visitors from more Westernised countries this may be a disappointment as it means that across the country as a whole there’s a lack of good hotels and transport links. Because of this, until the country is back on track, Equatorial Guinea may appeal more to backpackers and travellers who aren’t looking for high class hotels and resorts and want to see the real Equatorial Guinea.

Malabo

The capital and largest city of Equatorial Guinea is Malabo and it’s situated on the largest island, Bioko. Malabo, along with Bata on the mainland, are the exception when it comes to hotels and more upmarket facilities, so if you want to come to Equatorial Guinea and prefer to stay in a well known hotel these are the places you should visit!

Malabo was founded by the British in 1827 who leased the island from the Spanish. Later it was under the full control of Spain, and you’ll find a number of colonial buildings from these times still standing in the city. One major site, for example, is the colonial cathedral, but the palace and its grounds take up a large portion of the city. This palace is not for visiting though, and even if you try to take photos of it you could find yourself in serious trouble.

Rio Muni

The name given to the mainland of Equatorial Guinea is Rio Muni, where the major city is Bata. There is an international airport at Bata for flights to Equatorial Guinea if you prefer to land here rather than on Bioko.

Bata was once the capital so it’s quite a well established city. You’ll find a number of good hotels here as well as restaurants and even nightlife, so this city may appeal more to some visitors. The Bata market is a popular attraction, and you can reach Bata by ferry from Malabo.

When Should You Visit Equatorial Guinea?

Being so close to the equator Equatorial Guinea has an equatorial climate with hot temperatures remaining throughout the year. Rainfall is fairly abundant though December to March and the driest months, and April to October the wettest.
