Malabo is the capital and largest city of the Western African country of Equatorial Guinea. Situated on an island off the shore of the mainland, Malabo is home to the country’s main international airport.

Flights to Malabo

Although this is where the country’s main international airport is located, being such a small country there are not too many airlines who offer flights to Malabo. Landing at the Malabo International Airport (airport code: SSG), flights to Malabo from the UK are indirect and will have either one or two connections. You can get a one stop flight to Malabo with Air France, Lufthansa and Iberia, flying via Paris for example.

Malabo Tourist Attractions

Situated on the most major island of Equatorial Guinea, Bioko, Malabo is a port city and was founded by the British in 1827. The British leased the island off of the Spanish and established Malabo as Port Clarence, using it as a naval station with the idea of trying to clamp down on the slave trade. With this being a free town, Malabo became the home of many newly freed slaves, some of the ancestors of which still live here today.

Before being named Malabo in 1973, the city also had the name of Santa Isabel, named as such when full control of the island reverted to the Spanish. In 1969 Malabo was chosen as the new capital of Equatorial Guinea, over Bata on the mainland.

Despite being the capital since 1969 there is not as much to see in Malabo as visitors might expect. The city suffered under the rule of President Macias Nguema and many people fled. Without money being pumped into the economy for several years the infrastructure is not at the level it should be and so far tourism has not really been substantially pushed. There is now increasing foreign investment in to Malabo so there are a number of internationally-known hotels and some good restaurants, but apart from this, no real major tourist attractions.

There are some nice parts of the city where you’ll find old colonial buildings, particularly from the Spanish colonial period. These make a good attraction, as does the colonial cathedral. The presidential palace which takes up a large area of the city along with its grounds could be an attraction but is 100% off limits to any member of public. You can look at the buildings from afar, but make sure you don’t have a camera with you as taking photos is strictly prohibited. Even having a camera on your person could get you into trouble with the police, so it’s best to leave it in the safe in your hotel room.

When Should You Visit Malabo?

Malabo is located quite close to the equator so this means that temperatures remain high and fairly consistent throughout the year. Average highs are between 29 and 32C with lows of between 19 and 22C. The city is in an equatorial monsoon climate so it’s very wet here, but if you want to avoid as much rain as possible, by far the driest months in Malabo are December to February.
