Places in Eritrea
Eritrea is a country in the Horn of Africa region of eastern Africa and it’s bordered by Sudan, Ethiopia and Djibouti, plus it has an extensive coast on the Red Sea.
Flights to Eritrea
Eritrea technically has three international airports, but as yet the one in the capital city, Asmara International Airport (airport code: ASM), is the only one accepting international flights. Flights to Eritrea from the UK are all indirect with at least one connection. Lufthansa offers flights to Eritrea via Frankfurt, three times a week, or Egyptair and BMI also offer one stop flights to Eritrea from the UK. Eritrean Airlines flies from Frankfurt to Eritrea twice a week, however, separate reservations to Frankfurt from the UK will need to be made.
Eritrea Tourist Attractions
At present Eritrea is not considered to be one of Africa’s popular tourist destinations as like so many other countries it is experiencing problems. There have long been tensions with Ethiopia over the disputed border between the two countries so this region of Eritrea should be considered off limits. The Eritrean government currently has travel restrictions in place for those visitors travelling outside of the capital city, so you must check current foreign office recommendations before you make plans to travel to Eritrea.
Aside from the problems in this country Eritrea does have quite a lot to offer the intrepid tourist. Its towns and cities are attractive on the whole and it has a varied and scenic landscape to enjoy, though don’t expect a high level of tourist infrastructure here. There’s no getting away from the fact that this is a poor country.
Asmara
The capital and largest city of Eritrea is Asmara, situated inland from the Red Sea coast. Having been conquered by the Italians back in 1890 Eritrea still shows the signs of Italian architecture, especially here in Asmara where the colonial architecture is the main attraction. You can enjoy walking down the main street, Independence Avenue, admiring the architecture and stopping in one of the many cafés or bars for a drink, or do some shopping in the variety of stores found here.
At one end of the street is the Nyala Hotel, the tallest building in the city. Their rooftop café is a popular place to enjoy views over the city. Other attractions in Asmara include the National Museum, the Biet Ghiorghis Zoo and Park, and the surrounding scenery, including nearby Martyrs National Park.
Massawa
Other than Asmara, Massawa is one of the top destinations in Eritrea. This coastal city offers the benefits of the Red Sea and its islands, making this an emerging scuba diving and snorkelling destination, plus of course there are beaches to enjoy too.
The old town of Massawa is attractive with its Ottoman architecture and an ancient mosque, and by night this part of the city really comes into its own as the bars and restaurants become lively and there’s a bazaar to shop in.
When Should You Visit Eritrea?
In terms of the weather Eritrea is generally a hot country though in the highlands and mountains the climate is more temperate. The coast can be very hot whereas Asmara (which sits at an elevation of about 3000 metres/9843 ft) will keep cooler. You can expect warm and sunny days here but be prepared for chilly nights throughout the year. In Asmara the rains falls between February and April, and June and September.
