Addis Ababa Tourist Attractions

As a historic city Addis Ababa has plenty of landmarks and sights for visitors to see, as well as museums and a great deal of culture. Some of the city’s top attractions include the following:

National Museum of Ethiopia

Addis Ababa has several museums, but the National Museum is the most renowned. The museum is famous for being the home of “Lucy”, the partial skeleton of human fossilized remains, believed to be the oldest in the world, as well as the remains of a child called Selam which is considered to be the earliest child. As well as this famous exhibit the museum has other archaeological displays, artwork, ancient objects, and ethnography.

Amongst the other museums in Addis Ababa are the Ethiopian Natural History Museum, the Addis Ababa Museum, the Ethiopian Railway Museum, and the Ethiopian Ethnological Museum.

Cathedrals in Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa is home to two impressive cathedrals, St George’s and Holy trinity. St George’s is an orthodox cathedral that was built in 1896 and is renowned for its octagonal shape. The cathedral has a museum which you can visit. Holy Trinity Cathedral was built to commemorate the country’s liberation from Italy, and the tomb of Emperor Haile Selassie is located here.

Palaces

Addis Ababa has several palaces including some that are still in use and some that now serve other purposes. The Addis Ababa Museum for example is in a former palace. The National Palace was built to mark the occasion of Emperor Haile Selassi’s Silver Jubilee in 1955 and was hence formerly called Jubilee Palace. The current President of Ethiopia lives here. There’s also Menelik’s Old Imperial Palace which remains the seat of government for Ethiopia.

When Should You Visit Addis Ababa?

As the city is located so close to the equator the temperatures in Addis Ababa vary only very slightly across the year. Addis is not as hot as some other locations in Ethiopia because the city is at such a high elevation. This means visitors can enjoy the city without ever getting too hot! June to September are the cooler months and the wettest as rainfall at this time of the year is far higher than the rest. The average high temperatures range between 21C (70F) and 25C (77F).
