Ethiopia Tourist Attractions

Addis Ababa

Ethiopia’s capital and largest city is the centrally located Addis Ababa. Ethiopia is best known for its national parks but this city certainly has a lot to offer also, making it a worthwhile place to spend a few days at least at the beginning or end of your holiday. The city is full of some excellent museums and architecture, including palaces, churches and cathedrals, plus a great deal of culture to discover.

Harar

Another city that should be visited in Ethiopia lies a little way to the east of the capital. Harar is an ancient city and so it’s historically and culturally important; two reasons why it has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Harar is the fourth holiest city of Islam and the city features many mosques three of which date back to the 10th century. The mosques and other religious buildings are of course popular attractions in this city, but so too is a very different attraction, the former home of Arthur Rimbaud, the famous French poet. His mansion is open for tours.

National Parks in Ethiopia

Despite there being some great cities in Ethiopia many visitors come to see the country’s wonderful national parks. There are eight national parks in total, all of which are rated amongst the best in Africa.

The Simien (Mountains) National Park was one of the first World Heritage Sites so it’s long been considered an impressive and important place. If you want to see some great African mammals then the Mago National Park is the place to go. There are 81 species of mammals here including lions, leopards, giraffes and elephants, or if birdlife is more your thing the Abijatta-Shalla Lakes National Park should be your destination.

The Blue Nile Falls

Though not a national park, Ethiopia’s Blue Nile Falls are a popular attraction. Situated in the north of Ethiopia these beautiful falls are not as powerful as they used to be, with some of the water diverted to a dam. The source of the Blue Nile, Lake Tana, is not far from here and the lake itself is another attraction that you can enjoy. Take a boat trip around the lake visiting its islands some of which are home to the world’s oldest churches and monasteries.

When Should You Visit Ethiopia?

On the whole Ethiopia has a tropical monsoon climate though there will always be variations across the country, being as large as it is. The wettest time of the year is from mid June to mid September though rainfall can be expected at other times of the year as well. From October to January is generally the direst months. Summertime temperatures can be very high, though in Addis Ababa (at altitude) it will be cooler.
