Places in Gabon
One of the wealthiest countries in Africa, Gabon is situated in the central western part of the continent and has a coastline on the Atlantic Ocean. Despite Gabon’s wealth the population has remained relatively low which in turn has meant less development than some neighbouring countries, allowing Gabon to retain its rich and beautiful biodiversity; a top attraction for tourists today.
Flights to Gabon
International flights to Gabon arrive at the Libreville International Airport (airport code: LBV), just outside the capital city. Travellers flying to Gabon from the UK will need to take indirect flights, available through a few different airlines. Air France and Tri-MG Intra Asia Airlines for example provide one stop flights to Gabon from the UK travelling via Paris. Royal Air Maroc also has flights to Gabon from Casablanca though in this case you would need to book separate reservations to Casablanca from the UK.
Gabon Tourist Attractions
With the oil and mineral reserves in Gabon you might think this country would have been over-exploited but in reality it’s quite the contrary. Gabon has become one of the richest countries in Africa but has managed to keep the rich biodiversity that is now being promoted as eco-tourism, so visitors to this lush country can enjoy the vast rainforests that cover 85% of Gabon!
National Parks of Gabon
In their effort to protect and preserve these areas Gabon has created a total of 13 national parks so there are plenty of places that you can visit to see Gabon’s flora and fauna up close. The parks encompass a variety of landscapes so rather than visiting just one and thinking you’ve seen it all, choose a few different ones to go to. There are several coastal national parks for example, such as Loango National Park where there are whales and dolphins just off shore and beautiful white sandy beaches that are home to more than sun-bathers – elephants, gorillas and hippos may be seen wandering these shores!
In Mayumba National Park the leatherback turtles are a big attraction as these wonderful creatures nest here.
Libreville
Though Gabon is covered by 85% rainforests there are still some urban areas here! Libreville is the capital of Gabon and also the largest city. Situated on the coast this city has a laid back atmosphere and is a wonderful place to spend some time. Relax on the seafront enjoy the multi-cultural atmosphere, or visit nearby beaches. There’s an arboretum here too and boat trips out to the island of Pointe Denis are very popular.
Gabon’s Other Cities
Two other cities you might like to visit as a tourist in Gabon include Franceville and Port-Gentil. Franceville is a very attractive city and is renowned for its waterfalls, the most famous of which is Poubara Falls. Port-Gentil has a lot to offer too including a more vibrant nightlife and tourist oriented attractions such as the casino and beaches, plus a zoo and golf course.
When Should You Visit Gabon?
The equator runs right through the centre of Gabon so it’s no surprise that this country experiences an equatorial climate. This means Gabon has warm temperatures all year round and they vary little by season. What does dictate the seasons is rainfall – the rainy season is from October to May and the dry season from June to August.
