Libreville is both the capital and the largest city of Gabon, in central western Africa. This coastal city is situated in the north of the country and serves as a port, and despite being the largest city in Gabon Libreville has a laid back atmosphere where you can relax and take it easy!

Flights to Libreville

Libreville is home to the main international airport for Gabon, the Libreville International Airport (airport code: LBV), situated just 7 miles (11km) north of the city. There are several airlines that offer flights to Libreville from the UK and a couple of route options. Air France and Tri-MG Intra Asia Airlines for example offer flights to Libreville via one stop in Paris, though these flights can be pricey. Another cheaper option is to fly to Casablanca then catch a Royal Air Maroc flight to Libreville from there. This may involve a fairly long wait and you would need to book separate flights, but the cost saving often makes this worthwhile.

Libreville Tourist Attractions

As capital cities go Libreville is not a large city, with a population of only around half a million; it’s also not stuffed full with tourist attractions but it’s the city’s atmosphere and friendly people that make Libreville what it is. If you’re looking for a city where you can plan your holiday down to the minute then Libreville probably isn’t for you! The relaxed pace of live and laid back attitude may be annoying to some visitors, but a thing to relish for others!

Libreville Beaches

The nice thing about a visit to Libreville is that you can combine days on the beach with cultural attractions. Libreville offers a number of very nice beaches, some of which are usually very quiet, so great if you want a day of peace and relaxation. There’s Cap Esterias or about 30 minutes by car is Cap Santa Clara. Pointe Denis is a popular spot and is accessible via boat. This peninsula is across the bay and boat trips to it take around 25 minutes. The great thing about visiting the beach at Pointe Denis is that it’s a beautiful beach and has wonderful views of Libreville.

Libreville Cultural Attractions

The multi-cultural side to Libreville can be experienced just by spending time walking around the city, eating a meal in one of the city’s excellent restaurants, and spending time chatting to locals. The people of Libreville are usually very friendly and welcoming and happy to give help and advice. Try to get along to the National Museum of Arts and Traditions to get a real feel for Libreville’s culture, and visit the city’s two cultural villages. St Marie’s Cathedral and the old carved wooden church, are two religious attractions.

Shopping in Libreville

Shopping in Libreville is generally not as affordable as many other African nations, but if you’re looking for bargains you should be able to find some in the city’s main market, Marche Mont-Bouet. This will give you a taste of the more traditional way of shopping and you can pick up all sorts of goods here.

When Should You Visit Libreville?

Due to the equatorial climate in Libreville the city sees little variation in average temperatures throughout the year. The best time to visit is during the months of June, July and August as this is the dry season and temperatures are a few degrees cooler than the rest of the year. The wet season is long, lasting from late September all the way through to May. Average high temperatures across the year range from 28C (82F) to 32C (90F).
