Flights to Banjul
Places in Gambia
Banjul is the capital city of The Gambia in Western Africa. The city is actually situated on an island at the point where the Gambia River enters the Atlantic Ocean. Banjul is becoming increasingly popular as a destination for the British and Northern Europeans, offering an alternative to the more common summer holiday destinations.
Flights to Banjul
Being the capital city of a small country the Banjul International Airport (airport code: BJL) is the only international airport in The Gambia so it has a number of options for flights to Banjul. Charter airlines are now offering direct flights to Banjul from the UK whereas in the past flights would more likely have only been available with scheduled airlines, and indirect routes. Thomas Cook Airlines, Thomson Airways, Viking Airlines, and Hamburg International all offer direct flights to Banjul departing from several different UK airports. You can also fly on indirect flights to Banjul with airlines including Brussels Airlines, Royal Air Maroc, Air Senegal, and TAP Air Portugal.
Banjul Tourist Attractions
The city of Banjul itself doesn’t have too much to offer tourists as it’s the outlying beach resorts that the majority of visitors will spend their time in. However, there are a few things to see and do in Banjul so it’s worth spending some time away from the beaches and taking in the culture of the city and country as a whole. English is the official language so it’s usually very easy to make your way around and to speak to the locals; this is after all the best way to really experience Banjul and its culture.
Arch 22
The best known attraction in Banjul, and the most striking landmark is called Arch 22. Standing at the entrance to the city this arch was built to commemorate the coup d’etat of 1994 in which the President was overthrown and replaced by the still current President Dawda Jawara. Standing 35 metres high Arch 22 is several attractions in one. From the viewing platform you can enjoy some excellent views over the city, while inside there is a textile museum.
The Banjul National Museum
The Banjul National Museum is another of the city’s museums. It is a relatively small museum considering its ‘national’ status but it’s interesting all the same, featuring cultural and historical artefacts from Banjul and The Gambia as a whole.
Other Things to See in Banjul
Banjul is quite an attractive city so it’s a pleasant place to walk around. As you do, look out for some of the other sights of the city which include two cathedrals and several mosques such as the large Banjul King Fahad Mosque. Albert Market, Banjul Court House and Banjul State House are also in the city.
Banjul’s Beaches
Just outside the city are Banjul’s beach resorts. Bakau, Fajara and Kotu are the main ones, featuring plenty of hotels and restaurants and of course some lovely beaches. Bakau is the best established of the resorts and as such it also offers a few tourist attractions such as the botanical gardens, and the Kachically Crocodile Pool where you can get face to face with crocodiles!
