Places in Gambia
Officially called The Gambia, Gambia is the smallest country on the continental mainland of Africa. Situated in Western Africa, it has a very small coastline on the Atlantic Ocean, otherwise it is surrounded completely by Senegal.
Flights to Gambia
Gambia’s capital city, Banjul, is home to the country’s only international airport, the Banjul International Airport (airport code: BJL). From the UK there are several options for flights to Gambia allowing travellers to take direct flights or flights with two connections. Because The Gambia is increasing in popularity as a summer holiday destination for the British you’ll find several charter airline options, including Thomas Cook Airlines, Thomson Airways and Viking Airlines flying direct flights to Gambia. Hamburg International is another option offering flights from Bristol and East Midlands Airport. Scheduled airlines are also available though with a couple of stops, and the likelihood of more expensive tickets these may not be an option for some travellers. Royal Air Maroc, TAP Air Portugal, Air Senegal, and Brussels Airlines are options.
The Gambia Tourist Attractions
As mentioned above the British have recently rediscovered The Gambia and it’s becoming a popular alternative to the typical sun and sand destinations, helped by the fact that English is the official language. It’s not only the British though, as Northern Europeans in particular are coming for holidays in The Gambia and as the number of visitors goes up it means the quality and quantity of services available increases too. This is good news for future visitors to the country as you will have more, and better, hotels and other accommodation to choose from. Hopefully The Gambia will manage this growth in an ecologically friendly way.
Banjul
Banjul is the capital city of The Gambia and being home to the country’s international airport this is the top tourist destination in the country. Banjul itself does not have too much to offer in terms of tourist attractions and most visitors head just outside the city to its coastal resorts, such as Bakau, Fajara and Kotu. Here you can enjoy the beaches and most of the region’s hotels, plus several specific tourist attractions including the botanical gardens and crocodile pool!
If you want a day trip in Banjul itself there are a couple of places to head for. Arch 22 is the top attraction, built to commemorate the coup d’etat in 1994. From inside the arch you get great city views. The Gambian National Museum is another place to visit as are its mosques and two cathedrals.
Abuko Nature Reserve
If you want to leave the coastal resorts for a day the Abuko Nature Reserve is close enough for a day trip. Don’t expect the size and quality of some of the famous African national parks and you’ll enjoy what there is to see here! Just over 15 miles from Banjul the nature reserve is a good place to see some Gambian wildlife, birds and flora.
When Should You Visit The Gambia?
The most popular time for most tourists to come to The Gambia is between October and April as this coincides with the country’s dryer season. Basically there are two seasons in The Gambia – the rainy season is June to November and also the hottest time of year. From November to May temperatures are cooler and there is next to no rainfall.
