Places in Ghana
Ghana is a country in West Africa which is growing in popularity with visitors from around the world. The stable political climate makes this a safe place to visit and the friendly locals and wonderful scenery all add to the experience.
The main entry point for flights from the UK to Ghana is the capital city, Accra. Kotoka International Airport (airport code: ACC) is convenient for the city, and airlines offering flights from the UK include British Airways direct from London Heathrow to Ghana, plus Ghana International Airlines and Astraeus flying from London Gatwick. Other options for a flight from the UK to Ghana include flying via a European city, such as Amsterdam with KLM, or Frankfurt with Lufthansa as these may be more affordable options.
The Tourist Attractions of Ghana
Another reason why Ghana is becoming such a popular destination is its diversity of attractions. In Ghana you can enjoy beach resorts, National Parks, historic settlements, cities, scenery and wildlife, all within this friendly country.
Accra
The capital and largest city of Ghana is Accra. There are a number of things to see here though they do tend to be quite spread out so hiring a car may be a good idea. Alternatively, a popular and affordable way of getting around the city is to hire a driver. Ghana’s driver guides are actually very affordable and it saves you having to worry about directions.
Attractions include the National Museum, Christianborg Castle, historic Jamestown part of the city, Labadi Beach and more.
Lake Volta
North east from Accra is the largest reservoir in the world, Lake Volta, and the town of Ho at the southern end of the lake is a good base from which to explore the great scenery surrounding, which includes waterfalls, caves and more.
Central Ghana
The Central Ghana coastal region, west of Accra, is full of interesting attractions and history. Around the cities of Cape Coast and Elmina in particular you’ll find various World Heritage Monuments. These are mostly remnants of European occupation in Ghana, and include castles, dungeons and ancient forts.
Ghana National Parks
Ghana has a couple of national parks which are certainly worth visiting. The most popular is Mole National Park, situated in the north of Ghana. Although popular, Mole National Park is quite remote and would involve a 12 hour drive from the capital, Accra. Alternatively you can sometimes join a tour utilising a small charter plane which will land nearby to the park.
Once you get to Mole National Park you can admire the 90 different mammal species here. There is a large elephant population and other species you might see include leopards, lions and buffalos, in addition to about 300 bird species too.
Kakum National Park is a little easier to get to, being located in Central Ghana. This park is famous for its canopy walk which takes you over the top of the rainforest. Near to the park are other attractions, including the Monkey Forest Resort.
Beach Resorts of Ghana
With its coast on the Gulf of Guinea, Ghana has a great many beach resorts scattered all along the coastal region. The far western edge of Ghana is famous for its stilt villages. Then there are also the remote villages within the Amansuri Wetland.
When Should You Visit Ghana?
Ghana benefits from a tropical climate which gives the whole country warm temperatures all year round. Generally Ghana is dry, though there are some variations in humidity across the country, the south west for example is more hot and humid than the northern parts are hot and dry.
