Guinea Bissau Tourist Attractions

Guinea Bissau is one of the world’s poorest nations so don’t arrange a trip here expecting to see luxurious hotels and high-end shopping opportunities. There are hotels in the country, especially in the larger cities, and although standards can be good, the prices reflect this. In smaller towns hotels are not unheard of, or if you’re planning to stay for a little while a good option would be to rent a room in a house.

Bissau

The capital and largest city is Bissau and it’s situated on the coast. Bissau is a historic city and does still feature some historical attractions, though there were large parts of the city that were destroyed during the civil war. Bissau is best known for its annual carnival. Landmarks to look out for around the city include the barracks of the fort of San Jose de Amura, which were built in the 1700s and are home to a mausoleum. Also the Pidjiguiti Memorial; this memorialises the dockers who were killed during the Dockers’ Strike of 1959. The Presidential Palace is still standing though it’s only a shadow of its former glory as it was bombed during the war.

The Bissua French Cultural Centre and the Guinea-Bissau National Arts Institute are among the cultural attractions in the capital city, and while here you can also make use of the city’s beaches.

Other Cities in Guinea Bissau

Amongst the other important cities in Guinea Bissau is Bafata with its old colonial centre, and Boloma which was once the capital of the country. Boloma has some great examples of colonial architecture, though many are now decaying.

Cacheu is a nice little city on the coast and has a small fort that is still in good repair. This was once the point from which slaves were shipped out to the Americas. Also in Cacheu is the Tarafes de Cacheu Natural Park which can be reached via canoa boat.

Bijagos Islands

A little way off the coast of Guinea Bissau are the Bijagos Islands. This archipelago of around 20 islands is very beautiful and it’s possible to travel over to them and stay awhile. Accommodation is still basic, but there is talk of developing some islands into an ecotourism destination where visitors can enjoy the wildlife, including turtle nesting grounds.

When Should You Visit Guinea Bissau?

As it’s located fairly close to the equator, the climate in Guinea Bissau is warm throughout the year and temperatures don’t change much. Visitors will want to avoid the rainy season which occurs between June and September or October.
