Eldoret is a good-sized city in the west of Kenya in the Rift Valley that offers many amenities, but the main attractions are the numerous wildlife and nature parts in the region. Within a reasonable drive of Eldoret, you can choose from several Kenyan parks that will provide a variety of animals to see and countryside to appreciate.

Flights to Eldoret

The Eldoret International Airport (airport code: EDL) is about 10 miles outside of town but doesn't offer any service for UK flights to Eldoret. Your best option is to fly to Nairobi, and get a local flight to Eldoret with JetLink Express. You may also be able to get a train for the nearly 200 miles trip. Both Kenya Airways and British Airways have non-stop flights to Nairobi, though it may be less expensive to travel with Egyptair, and they have one connection in Cairo.

Eldoret Tourist Attractions

The parks are by far the main attraction of Eldoret, and any of them can be explored on your own, though it would be a good idea to drive a 4x4 when heading out to any of them. You can also go with a larger tour group if you prefer someone else to handle all the driving and navigation details.

Kerio Valley National Park

The closest to Eldoret is the Kerio Valley National Park, part of the Great Rift Valley which offers a greener landscape than most in Kenya, and much of the plant-life is semi-tropical and quite lush. The animals you can see here include elephants, crocodiles and buffaloes. Lake Kamnarok is well within the park and can be a good place to see animals and many kinds of water birds as well.

Kakamega Forest National Reserve

Kakamega is a relatively small park, and it was created to protect this heavily forested area. It too is within easy reach of Eldoret. This is a park that tourists come to for the tall trees, bird and orchids rather than the large game animals, though there are some species of monkey in the park. You can walk through several different trails, and the top of Buyango Hill can give you a great view of the whole park.

Mount Elgon National Park

In the mountains not too far from Eldoret is the Mount Elgon National Park, shared between Kenya and neighbouring Uganda. This is a more mountainous park than the others, and the volcanic area is rugged, making this an interesting place to go hiking. Make sure you see the four large caves in the park. Not only are the caves impressive, they are a known meeting place for the local elephants who feed on the salt inside. Other animals common in the park are buffalo, antelope, monkeys and hundreds of bird species. If you want some amazing views, hike to the top of Mount Koitobos which is more than 4,000 metres above sea level. There are campsites in the park, but no lodges.

When Should You Visit Eldoret?

Unlike some parts of Kenya, the weather in Eldoret is generally quite comfortable for touring and sight-seeing. No matter when you go, the high altitude means that the temperature does drop quite a bit in the evenings and it will be cool enough for a jacket during any time of the year. But during the day, it will be warmest in February and March when it usually gets to 26C (79F). July and August is a little cooler at 22C (72F) but that is also when the rains are the heaviest.
