Kisumu is Kenya’s third largest city, located in the west of the country on Lake Victoria. Kisumu’s lakeside location means this is an important port city, and for tourists there’s a selection of things to see and do.

Flights to Kisumu

It's not an international airport, but Kisumu Airport (airport code: KIS) is still one of the busiest in Kenya. You can choose from Kenya Airways, British Airways or Virgin Atlantic for a flight to Kisumu, all travelling the same 1-stop route through Nairobi. Alternatively, Egyptair will make two connections, first in Cairo and then in Nairobi. A flight to Kisumu with Ethiopian Airlines or BMI will both have two stops, in Addis Ababa and Nairobi. Most flights to Kisumu will take around 20 hours.

Kisumu Tourist Attractions

Kisumu may attract more business travellers than leisure tourists, the latter of which will tend to head for the capital, and largest city, Nairobi. However, if you’re looking for a Kenyan experience Kisumu is a nice city to visit with a good selection of attractions.

Kisumu Museum

Within the city centre of Kisumu, attractions include the Kisumu Museum. This is a combination of a zoo and a museum really, with a number of live animal exhibits within a selection of different pavilions. There’s an aquarium that features species found in Lake Victoria, and another with numerous species of snakes. Other pavilions feature the more traditional museum exhibits with artefacts from cultures of the region around Kisumu, and a re-creation of a traditional homestead.

Kisumu Impala Sanctuary

If the exhibits within the Kisumu Museum have sparked your interest in local wildlife, the Kisumu Impala Sanctuary may be next on your list of places to visit. The main inhabitants are a herd of impala but you can also see bird species, reptiles and hippos.

Hippo Point

Speaking of hippos, there’s a great viewpoint with beautiful vistas over Lake Victoria and it’s called Hippo Point. It’s named as such because there are sometimes hippos here, but don’t count on seeing any!

Ndere Island National Park

Known as both Ndere Island National Park, and National Reserve, this is a protected island in Lake Victoria with grasslands in its centre. There’s a herd of impala here too, as well as Nile Crocodiles, hippos and African fish eagles. Wildlife viewing is an attraction on the island, as is walking, and if you feel like staying amongst the wildlife, there are a couple of campsites.

Lake Victoria

Lake Victoria itself is an attraction, being the largest lake by surface area in Africa, and the second largest freshwater lake by surface area in the world. The lake was named for Queen Victoria by the first European to discover it, and is abundant in fish. Kisumu is one of the main ports on Lake Victoria, and from here you can take ferries to Kenya’s neighbouring countries.

When Should You Visit Kisumu?

There aren’t really any months in Kisumu that you can beat the heat, as it stays hot across the year. The average high ranges only by 3 degrees, between 34 and 37C because Kisumu is close to the equator. You may want to coincide your visit with the drier months though, which are June to October.
