Dating to the 14th century, Lamu is well-known as a Swahili town and you can see many examples of their culture and architecture there. It is also heavily Muslim compared to the rest of Kenya due to the Arab influence during the slave trade era. There are no vehicles in Lamu because of the old narrow streets, so you will have to walk around most of the city or even take a donkey! Lamu is not a large city by any means and most visitors come here to see a more authentic Kenyan town that is not geared towards tourists.

Flights to Lamu

The airport for flights to Lamu is on Manda Island, and it serves the entire group of Lamu islands. The Manda Airport (airport code: LAU) only handles domestic flights so you can't come directly from London. Fly first to Nairobi, and get a local flight to Lamu with Airkenya. You will need to arrive at Jomo Kenyatte International Airport (code: NBO) and then travel across town to Wilson Airport (code: WIL) for a flight to Lamu. Both Kenya Airways and British Airways have non-stop flights to Nairobi, taking just under 9 hours each.

Lamu Tourist Attractions

Lamu Fort

Built in the early 1800s, Lamu Fort was built for the Sultan of Oman and it sits near the port in the Old Town. It's a stone structure 2-storeys high and was used as a jail until 1984. Today it is a museum and community centre.

Lamu Old Town

Lamu Old Town is the old quarter of the city where you can see the oldest and most unique architecture. The streets are very narrow so it can be a bit crowded but it is a great place to see the local culture. Most of the buildings are shops so you can do some shopping while you browse around the area.

Donkey Sanctuary

Thousands of donkeys live on the island because they are the most common form of transportation. This sanctuary provides medical care and a place to heal for injured animals. You can visit to see the work that they do, see the donkeys and support their work.

Fishing

Being at the coast, you can do some fishing from Lamu for a little afternoon activity. The local waters should hold sailfish, snapper, yellowfin and more. There are several fishing charters that can take you out and they should know all the best places to fish and what's in season.

Dodori National Reserve

If you take a trip back to the mainland from Lamu, there is a nature reserve just a little way north along the coast. The park has large populations of birds as well as traditional Kenyan wildlife such as elephants, zebras, lions and antelope. It's a small reserve compared to the others in Kenya but it is a handy one to visit if you are staying in Lamu.

When Should You Visit Lamu?

Lamu has very consistent climate and is going to be hot no matter when you visit. May and June can be a little more rainy than average but the other months are fine for rain. The cooler months are July and August when it reaches 28C (82F) in the daytime. Most of the year will be over 30C though, with the hottest being March and April. Then it is at least 33C (91F).
