Nairobi is Kenya’s capital and largest city and it’s situated just south of the centre of the country, in East Africa. The city is home to the Nairobi National Park.

Flights to Nairobi

Nairobi is the main entry city in Kenya for air traffic, and the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (airport code: NBO) is about 9 miles (15km) outside the city. Nairobi also has The Wilson Airport (code: WIL) within the city limits, though this only handles local and charter flights to Nairobi. Both Virgin Atlantic and British Airways have non-stop flights to Nairobi when departing from Heathrow. Most other airlines will have 1 transfer stop, usually in their home cities. For example, KLM connects in Amsterdam and an Air France flight to Nairobi has a transfer in Paris.

Nairobi Tourist Attractions

While Nairobi is not the centre for tourism in Kenya it’s a great starting point. Not only is the city home to the country’s main international airport, it is also home to some great attractions, and can be used as a setting off point to get to some of the other very popular parks that Kenya has become so famous for. Nairobi is after all called the Safari Capital of the World, and its hotels are set up specifically to cater to tourists coming here for safari adventures.

Nairobi National Park

Located just outside the city is Nairobi’s most famous attraction, the Nairobi National Park. It may not seem like a true safari experience to visitors when you consider that you can still see the city skyline in the background, but it is a good introduction to Kenya’s national parks all the same. Nairobi National Park contains many large and popular animals including giraffes, rhinos and lions, and over 400 species of birds. The Nairobi Safari Walk is one of the top things to do here and this includes an educational centre as well as the chance to walk among the animals.

National Museum of Kenya

Nairobi has several museums and of these the National Museum is the largest. History, culture, and natural history can be experienced here, focusing on both Nairobi and Kenya as a whole.

Karen Blixen Museum

Famous for the book ‘Out of Africa’, Karen Blixen spent most of her life in Africa. She lived in her home, called Mbogani, in Nairobi, between 1917 and 1931. Interest in her home and life was sparked by the film version of the book in 1985 and the museum itself was opened in 1986.

Uhuru Gardens and Monument

Surrounded by beautiful lush gardens and fountains is the Uhuru Monument. This was built in remembrance is Kenya’s fight for independence which it finally achieved in 1963. The monument is impressive – a triumphal column at the top of which is a pair of clasped hands and the dove of peace.

Bomas of Kenya

Bomas of Kenya is an interesting cultural attraction. It’s a tourist village that re-creates the traditional villages of several Kenyan tribes giving you the chance to see what their homes are like, and experience traditional dances, music, crafts and more.

When Should You Visit Nairobi?

Situated just a little way south of the equator, Nairobi’s weather stays warm throughout the year with only a slight variation in temperature. During the summer, December to March, average high temperatures are between 23 and 26C (73 to 79F). Temperatures begin to drop by a few degrees coming in to winter, but it’s still warm with an average high of 21C (70F) in July. To avoid the most rainfall, visiting from June to October is best.
