Lesotho is situated in Southern Africa and is an enclave as it is completely surrounded by the country of South Africa. Lesotho is known as the ‘Kingdom in the Sky’ because it is the only country in the world to be at an elevation entirely above 1000 metres. In fact, the lowest point in the entire country is at a high 1400 metres!

Flights from the UK to Lesotho land at the country’s international airport, near the capital city of Maseru. Moshoeshoe Airport (airport code: MSU) is situated about 11 miles (18km) from Lesotho’s capital. You cannot get a direct flight from the UK to Lesotho, and all international flights actually come via South Africa. One stop flights are offered with South African Airways, British Airways and BMI via Johannesburg. A number if airlines also offer two stop flights to Lesotho. These include TAP Air Portugal, SAA, British Airways and BMI flying via another city before the connecting flight from Johannesburg.

The Tourist Attractions of Lesotho

Lesotho has a great many outdoor attractions, most of which are thanks to its high elevations. Thanks to this fact, Lesotho is becoming established as one of the world’s great adventure holiday destinations.

Maseru

Maseru is the capital and largest city of Lesotho, though the city does not have a great deal to appeal to visitors. Your flight will land at the nearby Moshoeshoe airport, and from there you can get a flight to most places in the country, so Maseru may be a good base to use for exploring Lesotho.

Just outside the city is Thaba Bosiu. These mountains gave protection to King Moshoeshoe in the 19th century, when the Kingdom of Lesotho was established. At the top of the mountain is the burial place of the King and other royalty, and the visitor centre at the bottom of the mountain gives you more information on this important historical event for Lesotho. A cultural village is under construction here right now, so there will soon be more to see.

A little further out from Maseru (about 40 miles/64km) is the small town of Morija. Morija is famous for the dinosaur prints which you’ll find in the surrounding hills!

Adventure Travel in Lesotho

As mentioned, Lesotho is establishing itself as a great adventure travel destination. There are numerous opportunities for adventure amongst some fantastic scenery.

Probably the most popular destination is Maletsunyane Falls. This is the highest single drop waterfall in Southern Africa and stands 200 metres high. You can visit the falls in a number of ways – the hike from the nearby small town of Semonkong takes about one hour, or you can try pony trekking. For the less adventurous visitors the falls are also accessible by road too, though a 4x4 vehicle is recommended.

Once at the falls you can simply admire them from the top, or be brave and go to the bottom! Because the bottom never any sun on it the temperature remains cool and it’s not unusual to find snow there, even in the middle of the summer. To get to the bottom there is a hike down the steep sides of the cliff, or try the world’s highest commercial abseil.

When Should You Visit Lesotho?

Being at such a high altitude you should expect the weather in Lesotho to be colder than most countries at this latitude. The Lesotho Highlands can experience snow all year round and the lowlands are also likely to have snow in the winter.

The summer (roughly December to March) has the highest rainfall, and also be prepared for heavy thunderstorms during this time. However, temperatures can be pleasant, reaching 30C in the capital, Maseru.
