Places in Liberia
Liberia is a West African country that has a coastline on the Atlantic Ocean and borders with Sierra Leone, Guinea and Ivory Coast. Despite having numerous attractions that would appeal to tourists, instability in the country, and damage to infrastructure, makes Liberia a potentially dangerous place to visit and travel to Liberia is not recommended at this time.
Flights to Liberia
The Monrovia International Airport (airport code: ROB), also known as Roberts International Airport, is Liberia’s chief airport for flights from abroad and it’s located around 35 miles from the city centre of Monrovia. Flights to Liberia are not recommended at this time and because of the security threats, getting there is not direct or easy. The easiest choice for a flight to Liberia seems to be to travel via Brussels. Many airlines offer flights to Brussels from the UK and from here you can catch a flight to Liberia with SN Brussels Airlines, flying non stop from Brussels. The alternative is to travel via Accra then catch a flight to Liberia with Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, or Nigerian Eagle Airlines.
Liberia Tourist Attractions
Liberia was founded by freed American slaves who came here in 1822 to settle and start a new life. They formed a Republic and set up a government on the same model as the United States, naming their capital city after the then President of the USA, James Monroe. The country was named Liberia, meaning liberty.
Life in the Republic of Liberia seemed to be ticking along quite happily until a military coup in 1980 and then a civil war in 1989 and 1999, with much civil unrest. Several years of war has meant that the country’s infrastructure suffered greatly, and with still some threats to peace Liberia should not be considered a tourist destination at this time. Tourists who do come here should not expect to find much in the way of tourist infrastructure, outside of the capital city anyway.
Monrovia
Monrovia is the capital and largest city in Liberia and is situated on the coast. There are several attractions, but these wouldn’t keep you busy for more than just a few days. Sights include the city’s beaches and Waterside Market where you can shop for many different items. The National Museum of Liberia is an interesting visit if you want to find out more about Liberia’s history and association with the USA.
The town of Paynesville is not far from Monrovia and makes a popular day trip. Its human-faced rock formation, called Blo Degbo Rock, is the main attraction here, as is skydiving from the disused radio mast!
Sapo National Park
Using the town of Greenville as a gateway to Liberia’s only National Park, Sapo, you can visit the second largest primary rainforest in West Africa. You may also see some of the park’s animal life; Sapo is particularly renowned for its elephants and pygmy hippos.
When Should You Visit Liberia?
Obviously don’ make plans to visit Liberia until it’s declared safe to do so, but when you do you’ll find there’s an equatorial climate here with temperatures remaining fairly constant throughout the year. May to October perhaps should be avoided as this is the rainy season.
