Situated on the Atlantic Coast, Monrovia is the capital and largest city of Liberia, in West Africa. The city does have a few tourist attractions to offer, though with the current instability travel to Monrovia is not recommended.

Flights to Monrovia

Flights to Monrovia will arrive at the country’s main airport, Monrovia (aka Roberts) International Airport (airport code: ROB), 40 miles from the city centre. Due to recent political instability in Liberia travel to Monrovia from the UK is not as simple as booking just one flight. Travellers have the option of flying to Brussels and then booking a separate flight to Monrovia with SN Brussels, flying non-stop to the capital. Another option is to book separate flights to Accra from the UK and then Accra to Monrovia with airlines including Nigerian Eagle Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, or Kenya Airways.

Monrovia Tourist Attractions

Over the last few decades Monrovia and the rest of Liberia has suffered civil wars and plenty of unrest and political instability. This has meant that the infrastructure of the city has suffered fairly extensively. Simple things that Western visitors would take for granted, like running water and electricity, may not be available and should be considered a luxury. There are still some good hotels in Monrovia, suitable for all budgets from low end to high end, however you have to pay a lot of money for hotels at the high end. Add to this the fact that travel to Monrovia is not recommended at this time because the safety of individual travellers cannot be guaranteed, and perhaps you’ll start to see that visiting this city is not a good idea right now.

When the situation improves, here are some of the attractions you could be enjoying in Monrovia:

National Museum of Liberia

Established in 1958 the National Museum of Liberia aims to display and preserve Liberia’s cultural heritage and history. The civil wars have had a fairly large impact on the museum as many artefacts were looted during this time, though there are still some interesting items to see including insight into the civil wars themselves. Having being moved around Monrovia several times since it was established the National Museum is now housed within the Old Supreme Court building.

Waterside Market

Though reports suggest that the city market is currently closed it’s hoped that once the city becomes more stable and safe to visit Waterside Market will again be opened.

Other Attractions in Monrovia

Being a coastal city Monrovia also offers some beaches. For families Monrovia Zoo will probably be a popular attraction, while on Providence Island there is a cultural centre.

Attractions Close to Monrovia

As there aren’t too many attractions in Monrovia itself you could always use the city as a base to explore some of Liberia’s other attractions. In the nearby town of Paynesville is a unique rock formation that looks like a human face, called Blo Degbo Rock. Quite a bit further down the coast is the town of Greensville. This is the gateway to Liberia’s only national park, Sapo National Park, situated inland from the coast and featuring West Africa’s second largest rainforest.

When Should You Visit Monrovia?

Obviously don’t plan to visit Monrovia until the city is declared safe for travel, but when it is there are only a few months in the year that don’t experience high rainfall. The tropical monsoon climate means Monrovia is a very wet city, with the main rainy season occurring between May and October, though there’s fairly high rainfall the rest of the year too. Temperatures remain hot all year round with an average high of between 27C (81F) and 31C (88F).
