Cyrene Ruins
The Greek ruins at Cyrene are more than 2,000 years old and a must-see when you are in Benghazi. There are ruins of temples, complete with traditional Roman columns and architecture all through the site. The modern town of Shahat is located near the Cyrene ruins so you will have a place to stay or shop while you are out there. Jebel Akhdar
Jebel Akhdar are the Green Mountains near the coast, and a beautiful place to walk or hike. The name comes from the heavy forests, which are unusual for a dry country like Libya. The area is north-east of Benghazi and easily reachable by road. There are valleys through the area, and some excellent views from the higher plateaus.
Lighthouse
There is an old lighthouse near the coast that many tourists stop to see, and next to the tower is another smaller set of Greek ruins. The ancient city of Berenice is near the lighthouse which adds another sight to see while you are in this part of the city. The old city existed under modern Benghazi and has only partially been excavated due to its location. There are still many house foundations and some small temples to be seen near the lighthouse.
