Officially named Great Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, this North African country is more commonly known by its more simple name, Libya. Libya has a large coastline on the Mediterranean Sea and is a country that’s made up of 90% desert. However it does offer a great deal of history and culture.

Flights to Libya

International flights to Libyan Arab Jamahiriya land at the country’s main gateway, Tripoli Airport (airport code: TIP). From the UK there are direct flights to Libya with British Airways flying from London’s Heathrow airport to Tripoli. Several airlines also offer flights to Libya with one connection including KLM, or with Air France or Tunisair for two stop flights.

Libya Tourist Attractions

Though not readily recognised as a prime tourist destination, Libya does actually have a lot to offer tourists, especially those interested in ancient history and culture. There are numerous sites across the country, including one of the best preserved Roman ruins in the Mediterranean region, and several UNESCO World Heritage Sites to visit.

Tripoli

Tripoli is an ancient city that was founded in the 7th century BC by the Phoenicians. It’s also the capital and largest city of Libya and has plenty of history to discover. For a good introduction to this long history start your visit in the National Museum, then head into the old city. This walled part of the city is called the medina and is like a journey back in time. It’s very atmospheric, wandering the narrow streets that are overlooked by the huge palace called the Red Castle.

Also in Tripoli you can see the only remaining Roman ruin in the city, the Arch of Marcus Aurelius, plus a number of attractive mosques.

Leptis Magna

Situated on the coast 81 miles east of Tripoli is one of Libya’s top attractions, the impressive Leptis Magna archaeological site. This is one of Libya’s World Heritage Sites and was a major Roman city, said to be second only to Rome in size. There are numerous things to see within the ancient city ruins, including an amphitheatre, the Severan Basilica, and the Arch of Septimius.

The modern city of Shahhat in north eastern Libya is home to another UNESCO World Heritage Site. This one was an ancient Greek city, called Cyrene.

Other Cities in Libyan Arab Jamahiriya

In addition to the above, many of Libya’s other cities feature historical sites too. The old city within Ghadamis offers something a little different – the buildings here were all designed so that they limited the amount of heat entering them, kind of like a historical air conditioning system! Gharyan is another popular destination, this one offering underground berber homes.

When Should You Visit Libya?

As most of Libya’s attractions are along the Mediterranean Coast this is where most visitors will stay. The rest of the country is a dry and hot desert, remaining hot throughout the year. Along the coast is a fairly typical Mediterranean climate with hot and dry summers and mild winters when there’s usually rainfall.
