Flights to Blantyre
Places in Malawi
Blantyre is the second largest city in Malawi, and was named by Church of Scotland missionaries who were settling in the area in 1876. As the commercial centre for the country, there are many Western-style stores, restaurants and hotels that travellers will appreciate. Outside of the city, there are 3 different nature and wildlife preserves within an easy drive for separate day-trips.
Flights to Blantyre will arrive at the Chileka International Airport (airport code: BLZ). You'll need to take a taxi for the 16 kilometre trip between the city and the airport. All flights to Blantyre from London have 2 transfers in their routes. South African Airways and British Airways both go through Johannesburg and Lilongwe. Or you could travel with Kenya Airways for connections first in Nairobi and then Lilongwe. One other choice is to fly through Addis Ababa and Lilongwe with Ethiopian Airlines.
Blantyre Tourist Attractions
Majete Wildlife Sanctuary
The Majete Wildlife Sanctuary is about 70 kilometres away from Blantyre, and filled with hilly woodlands and wide open grassy expanses. Many species of animals are found in the park, including rhino, buffalo, various species of antelope and even a small population of zebra. You will need your own 4x4 car or jeep to explore this rather rugged park.
Michiru Mountain Conservation Area
The Michiru Mountain Conservation Area is the closest park to the city, only 8 kilometres away from Blantyre. You can go hiking through the park on several marked trails, including a day-long walk that will take you to the top of the mountain. There, you will have amazing views of the surrounding countryside.
Mulanje Mountain Forest Reserve
The main feature of the Mulunje Mountain Forest Reserve is the rocky Mulanje Mountain, which is the highest point in Malawi. The mountain can be climbed but it is not an easy task and should not be part of your plan when you visit unless you are in extremely good physical shape. Nine rivers flow through the park, and offer a wide range of landscapes for you to see. It’s recommended that you hire a guide to take you farther up the mountainside, and you can hire one at the local forestry office.
National Museum
Locals call it the Chichiri Museum, and it’s located just east of the centre of Blantyre. Many cultural and historical items are on display, including many exhibits on the colonial period and slave trade. Meteorite samples are also on display, and an outdoor area has larger pieces of transportation equipment for viewing.
When Should You Visit Blantyre?
You will want to plan your trip to Blantyre around the rainy periods as well as during the cooler parts of the year. September through January are the hottest months of the year, with average daytime temperatures reaching around 32C (90F). It will also be very wet between December and March. So the best time to see Blantyre would be from June until August. It's dry then, and the temperature only gets to around 26C (79F) during the day which is hot but more reasonable for sight-seeing.
