Malawi is a country in south east Africa which gained independence from its British rule in 1964. Having been a British protectorate for over 70 years, the official language spoken in Malawi is English, making this is a great place for British visitors.

The main gateway for flights to Malawi is the capital city, Lilongwe. Kamuzu International Airport (airport code: LLW) has flights from the UK with a number if airlines, though unfortunately none are direct flights. One stop flights to Malawi are available with Ethiopian Airlines and Virgin Atlantic flying from London Heathrow and via Addis Ababa and Nairobi respectively. Alternatively two stop flights from the UK to Malawi are offered with Air France, KLM, British Airways, Egyptair and BMI.

The Tourist Attractions of Malawi

Like many African countries, one of the major appeals with Malawi is the flora and fauna. Wildlife reserves, lakes, national parks and cities form the major attractions of Malawi.

Lake Malawi or Nyasa

Malawi is dominated by the large lake which runs down the eastern border of the country, which is commonly known by either name of Lake Malawi or Lake Nyasa. This is the third largest lake in Africa, and the ninth largest in the world, spanning over 350 miles in length.

At the southern end of the lake is Lake Malawi National Park. This is a UNESCO listed World Heritage Site and was created with the primary purpose of protecting fish and their aquatic habitats. There are a large number of endemic fish species here, which is why it became listed as a World Heritage Site. In addition to the lake and the fish, the park is a good place to spot baboons and also holds an interesting 800 year old baobab tree which is said to have been popular with Dr David Livingstone.

Other National Parks

Malawi has five National Parks in total. These include Nyika National Park in the north of Malawi which is the largest. This is situated on a plateau and is a popular destination for mountain biking and trekking. During the rainy season, although wet you do have the opportunity to se over 200 different types of orchid in bloom!

Liwonde National Park has two lodges which provide accommodation and a variety of safari tours are offered on which you might see elephants, hippos, crocodiles, buffalo and several species of antelope.

Visitors who wish to see more of Malawi’s wildlife can also visit the numerous wildlife parks and reserves around the country.

Lilongwe

Lilongwe is the capital city of Malawi, though not the largest city of the country. There is not a great deal to see here as a tourist but it’s a pleasant city all the same, with lots of green, open space. Lilongwe is a good place to shop as there’s a number of malls and the popular craft market where you can pick up some beautiful hand made Malawi crafts.

When Should You Visit Malawi?

Malawi has a hot climate especially in the lowland areas and around Lake Malawi. With the increase in elevation the temperature cools. Summer (particularly November to April) is wetter and hotter with equatorial rains and thunderstorms. From March onwards, the climate is much drier.
