Lilongwe is the capital of Malawi in southeast Africa. The city is located in the centre of the country along the Lilongwe River. Unlike some capital cities Lilongwe is not bursting with tourist attractions, however it’s a nice city and worth spending some time in.
Flights to Lilongwe
About 15 miles (25km) north of Lilongwe is the main international airport in Malawi. Kamuzu International Airport (airport code: LLW) handles mostly flights from nearby African nations, so flights to Lilongwe from London will require 1 or 2 connections. South African Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Ethiopian Airlines have flights to Lilongwe with one connection. Their stops are Johannesburg, Nairobi and Addis Ababa, respectively. A 2-stop flight to Lilongwe can be taken with KLM, going through Amsterdam and then Nairobi, or with British Airways which has stops in Cairo and Addis Ababa.
Lilongwe Tourist Attractions
Lilongwe certainly isn’t heavy on tourist attractions though this relatively sizeable city is really quite attractive with lots of green space and a slightly more Western feel than you might expect for an African city. If staying overnight there’s a good selection of hotels in all price ranges and available in both the old town and the new town, plus there’s a plentiful selection of bars and restaurants and even a casino for an evening’s entertainment.
Lilongwe New Town
The New Town, or City Centre as it’s also called, is the newer part of the city that was constructed mainly since Lilongwe became the capital of Malawi in 1974, so this is definitely the more modern part of the city. There are many businesses, banks, exclusive hotels and more in the New Town, however the Old Town is the better place to go for shopping.
Lilongwe Old Town
The Old Town of Lilongwe is the location of the former village that existed here before it became the capital city. Despite the name you shouldn’t visit Lilongwe Old Town expecting historic architecture or lots of character because this really doesn’t exist. The Old Town is best known for its shopping and there are many different places you can shop here including the main market, shopping centres, grocery stores and more. There’s also a craft market where you can buy more traditional Malawian crafts and handmade goods, great for souvenirs and gifts.
Lilongwe Wildlife Centre
If you’re visiting Malawi the chances are that you’ll be heading out to some of its excellent national parks so a wildlife centre and nature reserve may not appeal in comparison. However, if you have some time to spare you can visit the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre where your admission fee can help with the rescue and rehabilitation of wildlife. While here you can enjoy a tour of the facility and its wilderness zone, and of course get to see a wide selection of wildlife. Just opposite the wildlife centre is the old Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary.
